Hello everyone,

I am currently planning a kitchen renovation and intend to use IKEA Metod countertops. I have the question: What is the best way to secure these countertops to the base cabinets during a renovation so they remain stable, do not shift, and show no damage or warping over time?

I understand that IKEA generally provides its own mounting options, but I keep reading about alternative methods or tricks that offer better stability.

Could you please explain in detail which screws, adhesives, or other tools should be used? Are there specific points on the countertop that need extra securing? Also, what should be considered regarding alignment and transitions to adjacent elements?

I would also appreciate tips on any important considerations depending on the countertop material (e.g., laminate, solid wood, or stone look).

Best regards and thanks in advance for your advice!

Hello Mattfo,

to properly and securely install IKEA Metod countertops, there are several important steps and materials you should consider:

- First, make sure the base cabinets are precisely leveled and aligned. The countertop will be placed directly on the cabinet frame and must fit snugly.
- IKEA provides mounting brackets that are attached to the inner edges of the cabinets. These brackets connect the countertop to the cabinets and prevent it from shifting.
- Use only the screw size recommended by IKEA, usually 3.5 x 30 mm (about 1/8 x 1 1/4 inches), to avoid damaging the countertop.
- To join the countertops at the seams, there are special connectors or joining fittings that allow for tension-free connections and compensate for slight movements.
- For laminate countertops, make sure no moisture gets onto the cut edges. You may want to seal these edges after trimming.
- Solid wood countertops require some clearance or flexible mounting points to accommodate their natural expansion and contraction.
- As a general rule, do not use glue, as it prevents the necessary movement and adjustment later on.

If you are installing countertops on uneven floors, it is worthwhile to work beforehand with a tension-free underlayment or leveling strips.

I hope this helps you.

Hello Mattfo,

I want to go into a bit more technical detail on Lorukeo’s explanation, as additional challenges often arise during renovations.

The most important points regarding the fastening of IKEA METOD countertops:

- Countertops are usually secured using angle brackets screwed to the sides of the base cabinets. IKEA offers specific metal “worktop connectors” designed to securely hold the countertop and resist tension and compression forces.

- Pay close attention to the screw placement. They should be at least 2 cm (0.8 inches) away from the countertop edge to avoid splitting, especially with laminate and wood-based panels.

- Before installation, make sure to acclimate the countertop for at least 24 hours to reduce possible swelling in materials like wood or coated panels.

- For stone or stone-effect countertops (e.g., quartz composite), a strong substructure is crucial due to their high weight and rigidity. Additional support profiles are recommended to distribute load points.

- Joints between two countertops are secured with special connectors. Use the IKEA connection fittings, as they sit flush and allow minimal gaps.

- If you need to cut the countertop, use a fine-toothed saw and then sand or finish the edges to prevent damage and fraying.

- Avoid using sealants or expanding foam at fastening points, as these can restrict natural movement and cause stress over time.

One last question: What kind of surface does your countertop have? Mounting requirements can vary between solid wood, laminate, or stone-effect, especially regarding moisture behavior and weight.

This way, we can tailor the recommendations more precisely.

Thank you for the detailed information, Filippo, very helpful.

My countertop will be a laminate panel from IKEA, which has a low profile and is relatively lightweight. So the weight is not as high as with stone-look surfaces. Additionally, I will be joining two panels because the area is larger.

I’ve also heard that laminate panels are particularly sensitive to moisture at the edges and can swell as a result. Is there a special tip on how to best treat or seal these cut edges to be on the safe side?

It would also be interesting to know whether the angle brackets for mounting the countertops need to be purchased separately or if IKEA includes them as standard when ordering a new countertop.

I’m open to further practical tips and alternative methods.

That is absolutely correct and a common cause of problems with IKEA Metod laminate countertops.

To avoid this, I recommend the following:
- After cutting, be sure to seal all cut edges with a special edge sealer (wood varnish or water-based acrylic sealant) or with so-called “edge banding.” IKEA also offers matching edge trims for this purpose.
- You can apply the edge banding using the proper ironing technique (medium heat) or special adhesives.
- Make sure that water from daily use does not penetrate the joints or edges. Silicone seals around sinks and countertops also help keep moisture out.

Regarding installation:
- Most IKEA countertops come with appropriate angle brackets, which are attached to the base cabinets.
- If yours don’t include them, you can order these brackets directly from IKEA as accessories. They are usually very affordable.
- Use screws carefully and avoid driving them in too deep.

I hope this helps with your project. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!
