praminHello everyone,
I am about to take on the task of regularly maintaining our BILLY shelves and want to use the appropriate care products to avoid damaging the material and to ensure long-lasting durability as well as a well-kept appearance. My specific question is: Which care products are best suited for BILLY shelves, especially regarding different finishes such as wood veneer, laminate, or painted surfaces? I am particularly interested in whether special cleaning agents are recommended that are both gentle and effective, or if it is better to rely on simple household remedies. It would also be helpful to know how often the shelves should ideally be cleaned and what to watch out for when applying care products to prevent discoloration, swelling, or other damage.
I look forward to your well-informed experiences and recommendations!

Hello pramin,
regarding your very well-structured question: BILLY shelves are often made of particleboard with a melamine resin coating, which makes them resistant to moisture and scratches. For maintenance, I generally do not recommend aggressive cleaning agents or abrasive pads. A mild dish soap in lukewarm water is usually sufficient to remove dust and light dirt. It is important to wipe down afterwards with a dry, soft cloth to prevent water spots and possible swelling.
For wood veneer versions, you can also use a special furniture care spray suitable for veneered surfaces. However, be careful: such care sprays are not necessary for laminated surfaces and may instead leave an unwanted film.
Regarding the proper cleaning interval: every four to six weeks under normal use is a good guideline. Of course, more frequent cleaning is recommended if dirt builds up quickly.
I hope this helps. If you have any questions about using these products, feel free to ask.

For maintenance, I generally recommend avoiding harsh cleaning agents or abrasive pads. Exactly! 😉 I usually just use a damp microfiber cloth and a little dish soap for my BILLY shelves. No magic involved, but it’s very effective and leaves no stains or scratches.
By the way, cleaning a BILLY shelf is almost like yoga: gentle, patient, and best done regularly. 🙂
A tip from me: if you want to make it look "nicer" without leaving any marks right after cleaning, a few drops of furniture oil on a soft cloth can help – but use it very sparingly. Not everyone likes it, but I find it keeps the surfaces looking fresh longer.
How often do I clean? About once a month, sometimes more often if there’s a lot of dust or if the cat goes on another shelf adventure. 😉

Which cleaning products are best suited for BILLY shelves, especially regarding different surfaces such as wood veneer, laminate, or painted finishes? I consider it essential to differentiate this detailed question, as the various surfaces indeed require different care approaches.
For example, melamine resin-coated laminate surfaces are more sensitive to certain solvents. There are reports that even common furniture cleaners containing alcohol can damage the surface with long-term use. Therefore, it is safer to use a simple water-and-dish soap mixture or a specialized laminate cleaner if you want to be cautious.
With real wood veneers or painted finishes, the situation is different: here, there is a risk of drying out or losing gloss. A furniture care product containing natural oils or waxes can protect the wood and preserve the surface.
Unfortunately, many basic cleaning routines show a careless approach to surface materials, which results in micro-scratches or discoloration.
In conclusion, care products should not be chosen blindly but rather tailored to the specific surface type. Personally, I recommend checking the manufacturer's product recommendations or using tested, pH-neutral cleaners certified for the intended use. Have you ever looked at IKEA’s own care instructions?
