Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to purchase a new Pax wardrobe and need to decide which doors to choose. It is especially important to me that the doors are sturdy and durable, particularly with frequent use, while also being resistant to scratches or dents.

I would like to know: Which Ikea Pax doors are particularly durable? I am referring to the materials, workmanship, and general wear and tear in a typical living environment – not just appearances, but also long-term functional reliability.

Has anyone had experience with the different options, such as solid wood or glass fronts, and can assess which doors are more durable? Information about fittings and hinges that might affect durability would also be helpful.

Thanks in advance!

Doors with a painted finish are more durable than those with a foil coating.
The most resistant are solid core doors, as they are made from solid wood material and are less prone to dents.
Glass fronts look attractive but are more fragile when impacted.

Basically, the durability of Pax doors depends on several factors: the material of the door panel, the surface finish, and the quality of the hardware.

The solid core doors used by IKEA are made of compressed wood fiberboard, making them more stable than thinner doors with particleboard and foil or paint finish. They are less prone to warping or denting. However, it should be noted that painted doors have a protective layer from the paint that enhances scratch resistance.

Glass fronts, mostly with inserts of tempered safety glass, look modern but can break or crack more easily upon impact—especially if you have small children or pets. On the other hand, they are more scratch-resistant than painted surfaces since glass is generally very hard.

The choice of hinges is also important: IKEA typically uses their metal hinges with soft-closing mechanisms, which are durable. Upgrading to stronger or damped hinges can improve longevity and ease of use.

One question for you: How frequently will the wardrobe be used? Multiple times daily or less often? This greatly influences the choice.

Solid core doors are durable and sturdy. If you want something for everyday use, you should choose those. Glass doors are more fragile. The fittings from IKEA are adequate; just install them normally.

I would also recommend solid core doors. They are sturdy and quite durable. Glass doors may look nice, but if durability is the priority, they are not ideal.

I can understand that durability is very important to you. It’s also a key factor for me with my Pax, as I use the wardrobe frequently and the doors are in daily contact.

Unfortunately, I’ve noticed some minor damage on the cheaper laminate doors from rough handling and scratches caused by keys, which is quite frustrating. I have found the more robust solid particleboard doors to be much more resistant, even though they are a bit more expensive.

It’s true that glass finishes look very elegant, but I found them to be quite vulnerable, especially in a busy everyday environment. Fortunately, the Pax range offers a wide variety of options, so everyone can find something that suits their needs.

Don’t worry— with a little patience, you will definitely find a door that meets your expectations for durability and appearance. What type of doors do you have currently? Maybe we can start from there.
