Hello everyone, I am planning to get the IKEA Platsa system and am looking for ways to customize these furniture pieces to suit my personal taste. My idea is that the furniture should not only be functional but also visually appealing—possibly through colors, finishes, or even modularity and add-on parts.
I am especially interested in practical ways to change the appearance of the PLATSA furniture without requiring too much effort or advanced DIY skills. Are there any recommended tips for painting, changing fronts, or using handles and lighting?
Also, it would be great to hear if anyone has experience combining different modules—what design possibilities does the PLATSA system offer, and what should be considered when customizing to ensure everything remains stable and functional?
I look forward to your tips and experiences!

The simplest way to customize PLATSA furniture is by replacing the doors and drawer fronts with other fronts from IKEA or painted versions.
You can also easily change the handles; IKEA offers several suitable models.
Additionally, lighting can be added using LED strips, which are usually self-adhesive.

For customizing IKEA PLATSA furniture, I recommend the following approach:
- First, check the surface texture of the chosen furniture, as PLATSA offers both smooth and lightly textured fronts, which affect paint application and adhesive solutions.
- For paints: use acrylic or chalk paints that adhere well to MDF or particleboard. You can lightly sand the surface beforehand to improve adhesion.
- Besides doors and fronts, consider modular combinations of individual elements, such as varying depths or stacking layers for storage plus visible surfaces.
- Handle selection: replace handles with modern alternatives or go handleless for a clean design using a push-to-open mechanism.
- Lighting: battery-powered or plug-in LED strips can be installed under shelves or in corners to create accents.
An important tip: ensure that modifications do not compromise stability. Especially when changing modules and attachment points, the load-bearing capacity must be maintained.

Make sure that any modifications do not compromise the stability.Exactly! Especially with PLATSA, it makes sense to plan a bit ahead so your furniture doesn’t end up wobbling in all directions.A little tip: use colored films or self-adhesive wallpapers to personalize surfaces. It’s very easy and really enhances the look — and if you don’t like it anymore, you can simply remove it.
Also, IKEA often has alternative fronts in the “Current Range” section. Sometimes you can find real gems there that are easy to install. Good luck with your upgrades!

A little insider tip: use colorful vinyl films or self-adhesive wallpaper to personalize surfaces. That sounds interesting. Can these films also be applied to doors and drawers without getting damaged when opening and closing?
Also, what about painting? Are the surfaces delicate, or do you need to pay special attention to preparation? It would be great if you could explain the pros and cons in more detail.
In addition to your already very good tips, here are some notes from my experience:
- Compatibility of fronts: IKEA PLATSA uses standardized dimensions, so most doors and drawer fronts fit interchangeably. However, caution is advised with custom sizes, especially regarding the depth of the modules.
- Films on doors and drawers: Using high-quality, flexible films works well, especially if the surface is lightly sanded beforehand. The smoother the surface, the better the film adheres. When opening and closing, it’s important that the films are not pulled, so edges should be glued neatly and corners possibly rounded.
- Painting: The surfaces of PLATSA are usually melamine-coated. It is recommended to lightly sand with very fine sandpaper to improve adhesion of paint or lacquer. Acrylic paints work well but should be sealed with a protective topcoat after drying to increase scratch resistance.
- Consider modularity: With the PLATSA system, you can create very flexible solutions by combining different modules. For large constructions, pay attention to appropriate wall mounting and cross braces for stabilization.
- Lighting: LED strips from DIY stores or IKEA can be easily installed inside or outside. Mains-powered lighting saves battery replacements.
I hope this helps with your project.
