Hello everyone, I am currently planning a renovation of IKEA Platsa furniture and am looking for recommendations on which tools are really useful for this.

My goal is to modify the modules, improve the fastening of existing joints, and possibly make cutouts without compromising stability.

Which hand or power tools have you used in practice to work efficiently and precisely? Are there any specific accessories or tips that have proven especially helpful?

I would appreciate any shared experiences.

For the PLATSA renovation, you mainly need a cordless drill with a torque setting, which saves you a lot of time when screwing.

Also, a good jigsaw is useful if you want to make cutouts, and sandpaper for finishing the cut edges. Usually, nothing more is required.

I would like to provide a brief overview with recommendations that have proven effective for modifying IKEA PLATSA systems:

- Cordless drill/driver: A model with adjustable torque helps prevent overdriving screws into the relatively thin panels.
- Jigsaw: Ideal for cutouts in back panels or for adjusting side panels. Use a fine-tooth blade for clean cuts.
- Multi-tool (also called an oscillating tool): Allows precise cuts and adjustments in hard-to-reach areas, for example, for cable pass-throughs.
- Hammer and wood chisel: Useful for opening joints or gently removing fitted parts.
- Sandpaper or sanding block: To smooth cut edges and protect surfaces from damage.

A common mistake is trying to cut too aggressively. It’s better to work patiently with the right tools to avoid damaging the furniture.

In summary, I recommend having these tools ready to carry out the modifications in a controlled and neat manner.

This is an important point, as many people tend to drive screws in too deep or cause wood splintering during assembly.

I would like to add that a cordless drill with a screwdriver attachment is very useful for PLATSA; however, I see the benefit of a cordless screwdriver somewhat more nuanced: While precision when driving screws is important, for fine cuts or recesses, selecting the right saw blade for the jigsaw is equally crucial.

Furthermore, we should not only pay attention to the tools but also ensure using the appropriate screws and wall plugs. Using the right combination can make the renovation much more stable.

Otherwise, there is a risk of weak points developing over time that only become visible after several months.

I agree with that. Additionally, I recommend a hammer drill set with small drill bits if you plan to install wall plugs or special fasteners. Precise positioning is often important with the PLATSA system, which greatly simplifies the assembly.

Also, be careful when using power tools if you want to avoid damaging surfaces—jigsaw blades with fine teeth and clean guidance are invaluable.

Finally, a good tape measure or a try square helps to transfer measurements accurately, something many people underestimate.
