Hello everyone,

I have a Kallax shelf from Ikea at home, which I fitted with doors. Unfortunately, whenever a window or the front door is opened, a draft moves through the apartment and causes the Kallax doors to slam shut loudly. This is not only annoying but can also strain the door hinges over time.

My question is: What are effective ways to dampen or prevent the Kallax doors from slamming shut due to drafts?

I have already considered door or furniture dampers but am unsure which type of solution is best suited for the rather lightweight doors and how to install them properly. Are there simple, cost-effective methods that can help as well?

I look forward to your tips, experiences, and any recommendations for products that have proven particularly effective.

Hi!

I’m very familiar with the problem of doors slamming shut. For the Kallax doors, I’d suggest starting with soft door bumpers. They’re really easy to install, very inexpensive, and noticeably cushion the impact.

You can use self-adhesive rubber bumpers or small silicone sleeves that are mounted on the inside of the door or on the shelf panel. This way, nothing will bang around, and any drafts will at most cause a small click 🙂

If you want a bit more comfort, there are also small dampers with gas springs or hinge dampers, but these are often designed for heavier doors. For light MDF doors like those on Kallax, they’re not always necessary.

This recommendation makes sense.

For better cushioning, position the bumpers so that the door closes against the soft material rather than directly on the wood.

Alternatively, dampers with damping mechanisms (hydraulic, gas) are possible but significantly more expensive and more complicated to install. Since Kallax doors are very lightweight, installation often may not be worthwhile.

Recommendation: Soft door bumpers combined with rubber strips or magnetic catches that additionally hold the door and prevent slamming.

I think people often underestimate how much effort and money they spend on small comfort improvements that could be avoided with smarter planning.

Why not simply reduce drafts or address the root causes instead of constantly repairing or upgrading these doors? Position fans differently or close windows in a way that prevents strong drafts.

I wonder if we often turn too quickly to technical solutions in forums, whereas simple ventilation or a gap stopper on the window might be the more affordable and sustainable option.

That’s a good point.

In many cases, the best solution is to eliminate the sources of drafts directly, for example through better sealing around windows or doors. If that is not possible or not sufficient, draft stoppers on the windows can help.

Additionally, I find rubber buffers or felt pads useful on the Kallax doors. They are inexpensive, easy to install depending on the model, and protect the surface of the shelving unit.

If the doors slam shut hard, I advise against installing heavy, expensive dampers, especially on lightweight doors. A combination of draft reduction and simple soft materials usually offers the best compromise.

Attach rubber or felt buffers at the stop points.

Use hinge dampers if the door is quite solid.

Otherwise, minimize drafts. Done.
