Hello everyone,

I recently started using some Ikea Hemnes furniture pieces on my terrace. Since these furniture items are not specifically designed for outdoor use, I am considering how to make them more weather-resistant to extend their lifespan and reduce damage from moisture, UV rays, or temperature fluctuations.

I am particularly interested in:
- Which materials or finishes are best to use without significantly altering the appearance?
- Are there recommended preparatory methods (e.g., sanding, priming) for Hemnes furniture?
- How often should protective coatings be reapplied when the furniture is kept outdoors?

I appreciate practical advice based on experience or well-founded knowledge. Thanks in advance!

Hello Georgioste,

Your question is well formulated and to the point. To make Hemnes furniture weather-resistant, it is important to know that it is usually made of pine wood, either untreated or painted. Without proper protection, it can be damaged quite quickly when used outdoors.

Here are my recommendations:

- Sand the surface carefully (grit 120–180) for optimal adhesion of the protective coating.
- Use a high-quality, exterior-grade wood primer that protects against moisture and fungal decay.
- Apply several layers of weather-resistant wood stain or UV-resistant clear varnish on top.

Please avoid using purely decorative furniture paints, as these are usually not breathable and can cause blistering. Regular maintenance about once a year is advisable, depending on location and weather conditions.

If the furniture is often exposed to direct rain, additional covering during the winter months might also be helpful.

Hello everyone,

Complementing gadalus’s answer, I would like to provide a brief step-by-step guide on how to make Hemnes furniture weatherproof:

- Step 1: Sand the furniture completely until smooth and all old varnish residues are removed. Important: For pine wood, do not use sandpaper that is too fine for pore-opening preparation; 120 grit is sufficient.

- Step 2: Wipe the furniture with a damp cloth to remove dust and sanding residues.

- Step 3: Apply a wood primer that is moisture-resistant and mold-resistant. It should be certified for outdoor use. Let it dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

- Step 4: Apply a high-quality, clear wood varnish or weatherproof wood stain, ideally with UV protection. Apply at least two coats, each very thin and allowed to dry thoroughly.

- Step 5: After 1–2 days of drying time, a third coat can be applied to optimize protection.

A common mistake is applying coats that are too thick, which can cause blistering or cracking. Also, make sure not to treat the furniture in direct sunlight or high humidity.

Regular inspection and revarnishing approximately every 12 months will significantly extend the lifespan.

If possible, store furniture indoors during winter or at least cover it.

This is an important point because, despite high-quality protective coatings, Hemnes furniture made of pine wood remains susceptible to moisture and temperature fluctuations. I have had good experiences with breathable covers that allow moisture to escape while being waterproof at the same time.

One more recommendation:
- Before applying the protective coating, all visible joints and edges can be treated with wood glue or a special sealant to prevent water penetration.
- Occasional cleaning with a mild detergent helps prevent mold growth.
- The furniture should also not be placed directly on the ground but, for example, on small plastic feet or plant cones to reduce splash water.

These precautions significantly extend the lifespan and help keep the furniture in good condition.

Important: Apply several thin layers and allow each to dry thoroughly in between!

Also, sanding between paint layers is recommended to improve adhesion of the next coat.

And: Hemnes furniture should be checked regularly, and small damages repaired immediately, otherwise moisture and mold can develop quickly.
