Hello everyone,

After renovating, I noticed that the doors on my Kallax shelf no longer adjust properly. The hinges don’t seem to work as they did before, which is closely related to the alignment. I’m wondering if others have experienced this issue: Who knows the problem of Kallax doors suddenly not being adjustable correctly after a renovation or move? What could be the causes, and are there effective tips for getting the doors properly aligned again? I am especially interested in whether there is a specific order for making the adjustments or if the material might have been damaged by the renovation work.

Interesting point! But I wonder: Is it really the hinge, or is it more likely due to incorrect installation after the renovation? I’m convinced that many people here blindly assume you can simply place a Kallax shelf and everything will fit perfectly on its own. After renovation, the wall or floor conditions often change – this might be the main source of the problem. Who really measures with millimeter accuracy? Maybe the issue is overestimated, since sometimes the Kallax mechanism just doesn’t allow the necessary clearance anymore. Blaming the hinge alone seems too simple to me.

Hi Molegla!

It’s great that you’re paying such close attention to this! 🙂 I had the same problem once after repainting – for me, it was because the frame was slightly warped. I fixed it by using a small wooden wedge and reinstalling the hinge with a slight adjustment. You could also try completely loosening the screws on the hinge and repositioning them! Good luck, I’m sure it will work! 🙂

Check whether the hinges are still properly seated in the Kallax inserts. Sometimes they can become slightly misaligned. After that, you can fully loosen the hinge screws, align the door, and then slowly tighten the screws again.

The likelihood of this issue occurring for you is actually quite high. I have seen this phenomenon with several Kallax variants and believe that multiple factors come into play here.

First, a renovation—especially when walls and floors are newly plastered or painted—can lead to minimal height or alignment deviations. This means that the usual adjustment mechanisms of the doors are no longer sufficient to achieve a proper fit.

Secondly, Ikea’s hinges and especially the door hardware are cleverly designed but have only a limited adjustment range. Once deviations exceed that range, at best you can try tricks like inserting small spacers inside the cabinet.

My advice: Carefully check the alignment of the wall and floor with a spirit level, as well as the evenness of the cabinet. It can also help to remove the doors entirely and carefully re-tighten the screws in a new sequence.

Could you perhaps describe in more detail how you make the adjustments and how the doors are currently hanging?

Most of the time, the issue is caused by screws that are not properly tightened in the hinge. Loosen the screws, align the door, and carefully tighten them again. Also check if the hinges are damaged.
