I am looking for ways to make IKEA Malm dressers child-friendly and at the same time very stable. Specifically, I want to prevent the dresser from tipping over during careless use or having sharp edges that could be dangerous for children. Additionally, it would be great if the dresser is sturdy enough to withstand some extra stress – for example, if kids climb on it or hold onto it.
I have already considered wall anchoring and edge protection but am not familiar with the best materials or installation methods to make the dresser truly safe and stable for children. Does anyone have experience with optimizing such furniture for children’s rooms? Maybe also tips for regular checks or maintenance? Thanks for your ideas!

Hi, the best solution for Malm dressers is always to secure them to the wall using appropriate angle brackets. Edge protectors made of foam or silicone can be easily applied on the outside. Otherwise, the only option is to concentrate the weight at the bottom of the dresser, which makes it less likely to tip over. That’s it.
Hello duannabell,
I’d like to give you a brief guide on how to make Malm dressers child-friendly and stable:
1. Wall Anchoring: IKEA usually provides safety anchors that are fairly simple to install. It is important to secure the dresser to the wall using wall plugs and screws—ideally into a solid support beam or a sturdy wall.
2. Edge Protection: There are special edge protectors made of flexible plastic or rubber for the corners and handles. These soften the most dangerous spots for children without getting in the way.
3. Internal Load: Place heavy items in the lower drawers to lower the center of gravity and significantly increase stability.
4. Inspection: Check once a year to make sure the wall anchoring is still secure and the dresser is not wobbling. Screws can loosen over time.
If you want to reinforce the dresser further, you can screw sturdy plywood panels to the back to stabilize the rear panel. This will increase stability but requires a bit more effort.
I hope this helps!

Back then, I simply chose some neoprene edge protectors, which are soft and non-slip at the same time. This way, the kids don’t get nasty scrapes while playing, and the dresser stands firm like a rock. 😉
Of course, don’t forget to check these regularly, as kids tend to stash clothes and toys in the drawers, changing the weight. A bit of maintenance and cleaning can be fun too, right?

I want to prevent the dresser from tipping over if handled carelessly or having sharp edges that could be dangerous for children.I really appreciate that you pay such close attention to safety. I had a similar experience with my daughter. We always secured the Malm dresser as well, and I found it reassuring—especially when little ones are playing roughly and testing everything out.
Sometimes it can feel a bit overwhelming, but consistent wall anchoring and edge protection can really help ease concerns. And the idea of making the dresser sturdy also helps against those little climbing attempts that kids love.
How old are your children? Depending on their age, there might be additional safety considerations to keep in mind.
