Hello everyone,

I have been considering using my IKEA PAX wardrobe to store my sports equipment. The challenge is that the equipment varies greatly: from shoes, balls, and helmets to yoga mats and smaller fitness items like jump ropes or resistance bands.

My main question is: How can I best organize my PAX wardrobe so that all items are well stored, easily accessible, and kept tidy at the same time? What kind of division or layout would you recommend, and are there proven tips for using suitable inserts, baskets, or compartments for specific types of sports gear?

Additionally, I am interested to know if others have experience with special modifications or additional IKEA accessories to optimize storage space and create more capacity without making everything look messy.

I look forward to your ideas and suggestions!

It’s best to use a combination of shelves and drawers. For shoes, drawer inserts work well, while baskets or boxes are suitable for smaller items. Yoga mats can be stored on top or on the side, half rolled to avoid taking up too much space.

I’d like to provide a brief guide on how to optimize a PAX wardrobe for sports equipment:

- First, organize by function: shoes, small items (jump ropes, bands), and larger pieces (yoga mats, helmets).
- For shoes, shallow drawers with dividers work well, as they keep everything visible and easily accessible.
- Collect small items in baskets or boxes to avoid losing them.
- For larger, bulky pieces like yoga mats, use adjustable shelves or attach a vertical holder to the side of the wardrobe.
- Ensure a mix of open and closed storage options to allow air circulation, especially for sports gear that can get sweaty or damp.

Common mistakes include stacking everything in one area or failing to separate by size and function. This can quickly lead to clutter and disorganization.

It is important to consider the load limits of the shelves when using Pax – some sports equipment is heavy or irregularly shaped. Therefore, I would recommend choosing an extra sturdy drawer or shelf for heavy items like certain fitness equipment.

Additionally, it is worth planning a drawer at chest height for frequently used items, so that they are easily accessible and convenient to use.

A sustainable organization relies on clear categories based on how frequently you use the items. Things you use often should remain easily accessible.

Additionally, I recommend using the existing IKEA accessories like rods for hooks (for helmets or larger balls) and uniformly sized boxes for similar items. This way, the system stays modular and easy to adjust when your collection changes.

Moisture absorption is an important aspect; consider breathable boxes or covers if, for example, you want to store freshly used gym shoes.

I can easily understand how sports equipment can quickly become disorganized.

I had a similar experience, and the great thing about the PAX system is how flexible it is. For example, I use the flat drawers for my shoes and boxes beside them for smaller items – this really helps keep things tidy. It was important for me to leave the cabinet doors open when something was still damp, otherwise it can get musty.

Maybe you could establish a routine to regularly sort through your gear? That helped me avoid just stuffing everything in and then forgetting about it.

I’d be interested to hear what others recommend!
