Hello everyone, I’m currently planning the renovation of my kitchen using the Ikea Metod system and am considering the best way to handle lighting inside the kitchen cabinets. Specifically, I want to not only improve visibility in the upper cabinets but also create a pleasant atmosphere and integrate the power supply as discreetly as possible. What types of lighting (LED strips, spotlights, puck lights, etc.) have worked well for you? Are there any special tips regarding wiring or installation to keep the setup neat while achieving good illumination? I would appreciate detailed experiences and recommendations, as I value both functionality and design.

Hello Adrian40, your question perfectly matches the topic I dealt with extensively when I equipped my Metod kitchen myself. In my opinion, optimizing the lighting involves several steps:

- First, selecting the light sources: LED strips are extremely flexible and can be hidden behind edges, creating an indirect, glare-free effect. Puck lights (small round LEDs) are good for focused lighting, for example in deep drawers or the lower parts of the upper cabinets. Spotlights with adjustable heads offer more flexibility but are more difficult to install and require a recessed mounting area.

- Wiring: I recommend using cable ducts or channels, which Ikea partially offers themselves. It is important to lay enough spare cable in case an extension is desired later. Ideally, route cables invisibly along the cabinet carcasses and secure them with cable clips to prevent any loosening or dangling.

- Power supply: For the Metod fronts, there are LED modules operating on 12V DC, powered by power supplies. Make sure to install the power supplies centrally and in a well-ventilated area, as they can generate heat. Choosing the right power rating is also important to ensure all LEDs receive sufficient power.

- Installation: Personally, I attached LED strips to the top of the upper cabinet’s crown molding so the light shines downward and simultaneously illuminates the work surface nicely. Additionally, I installed individual spotlights in the corners to avoid shadows.

Back to your question: what are the exact dimensions of your cabinets, and do you already have an idea about the electrical connection? Depending on that, I can provide more specific advice on the material list and recommended products.

That sounds like a really well-thought-out solution! I believe the atmosphere in the kitchen makes a big difference – and the right lighting greatly enhances the overall comfort. At first, I found it quite challenging to strike the right balance between bright functionality and cozy lighting. I also tried LED strips once, but they were unfortunately too harsh and flickered because they weren’t dimmable.

Nowadays, I rely on dimmable light sources and try to combine different types of lighting – for example, LED strips as general lighting and small, warm puck lights inside the cabinets. Being able to adjust the lighting according to the time of day has really helped me experience the kitchen as a pleasant space, not just a workspace.

Adrian40, have you considered controlling your lighting with a smart system? It makes adjusting to personal preferences easier and can also help save energy. I know it’s not for everyone, but it has made a difference for me.

Hey Adrian40, really interesting question! I recently solved the exact same problem and can only say: LED strips are truly amazing, especially with warm white light. I mounted them with self-adhesive tapes from Ikea directly under the cabinet shelves. It really brought my kitchen to life!

The most important thing is to ensure even light distribution so that no shadows form. That made all the difference for me – everything is evenly lit, and working on the countertop is twice as enjoyable!

Exactly, dimmable LEDs are worth their weight in gold! I also installed a simple remote control to quickly adjust the brightness. It’s great that you can switch the light to a softer evening mode as well.

I would also recommend paying attention to the color temperature – I personally like 2700K to 3000K because it feels warm and cozy. One more question: Have you already chosen a specific mounting system? Some LED kits are specially designed for Ikea Metod and make installation much easier.

When optimizing the lighting in Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets, the following technical aspects should be considered:

- Light output: For wall cabinets, at least 300 to 500 lumens per linear meter of LED strip is recommended to achieve sufficient brightness.

- Installation location: Mounting the lighting underneath the cabinet shelf provides direct illumination of the work surface. Alternatively, LED profiles can be installed at the top inside the cabinet to create indirect lighting.

- Color temperature: For task lighting, a neutral white light around 4000 Kelvin is advisable, as it renders colors accurately; for mood lighting, 2700–3000K is appropriate.

- Electrical safety and wiring: It is recommended to use a 12V system with certified power supplies and suitable low-voltage cables. The cables should be secured with cable ties or clips and must not be subjected to strain.

- Control: Phase-cut dimmers are technically best suited to make LED strips dimmable. Alternatively, smart home–controlled controllers (Zigbee, Wi-Fi) can be used.

Additionally, knowing the exact cabinet dimensions is important to order the appropriate lengths of LED modules and, if necessary, matching connectors.

Careful planning of the power supply is essential to facilitate future expansions or repairs. The integration into the Metod furniture system is simplified by prefabricated mounting kits, which it makes sense to use.
