Hello everyone, I have the following problem: My IKEA Malm bed still squeaks despite regular maintenance and tightening of the screws. I have checked the screws multiple times, lubricated all the joints, but the creaking and squeaking persist. It’s quite annoying, especially at night when turning or getting up. Does anyone know this problem and have suggestions on what else can be done? Maybe the design or the material is just prone to this? I would appreciate any tips on what I can try without having to take the bed apart or buy a new one.

To be honest, that sounds like a common issue with narrow wooden slats made of particle board or MDF. Have you checked whether the squeaking comes from the slatted frame support or the connections to the bed frame?

What type of oil did you use? Some oils can become sticky over time or even damage the material, which can make the problem worse.

I ask because often there is no lasting solution without replacing some of the materials or improving the contact points.

Try using graphite powder instead of oil on the joints. It doesn't leave grease and can significantly reduce friction.

I used regular machine oil, not WD-40 or anything like that. I have treated other furniture with it in the past, but it didn’t help with the bed.

The squeaking seems to come more from where the slatted frame meets the bed frame, specifically from the small wooden parts supporting the slats. It often squeaks when I turn over.

Graphite powder is a good idea, but it’s hard to get where I am. Are there any alternatives?

Try applying talcum powder or baby powder to the contact surfaces. This absorbs moisture and reduces friction. That might be enough.

That’s amazing how versatile such simple solutions can be! 🙂 I’ve also used baby powder on my MALM, and after a few days, it got a lot better! Just give it some time; it really does help!! 🙂
