ᐅ How do I install IKEA Metod cabinet doors for a perfect fit?

Good morning everyone, I am currently facing the challenge of how to install the doors of my IKEA METOD cabinet as perfectly as possible, so that they not only look straight but also close precisely and have no uneven gaps. I have already installed the included hinges, but unfortunately, some doors appear slightly warped or do not sit exactly in place. I suspect that careful adjustment of the hinges is key here, possibly also the correct screwing of the doors to the cabinet frame. Does anyone have experience or tips on how to achieve an optimal fit specifically with METOD doors? Are there special tricks for alignment, hinge adjustment, or door installation that go beyond the basic instructions? I would appreciate very detailed advice, as this topic is more complex for me than I initially thought. Thank you in advance!

One last tip: If you have doors on a very large cabinet that tend to sag slightly, it can help to reinforce the lower hinges with so-called hinge reinforcements. IKEA does not sell additional reinforcements specifically for METOD cabinets, but sometimes a small metal plate that better distributes the weight can be useful. Be careful not to cause any damage. One final note: If the cabinet itself is not perfectly level, aligning the doors will be more difficult. Therefore, checking the cabinet’s dimensions is important.

Thanks, this information was completely new to me. I have two large 80cm x 60cm (31.5in x 24in) cabinets side by side, with doors approximately 60cm x 80cm (24in x 31.5in) in size, and the weight is noticeable. Where do you get the reinforcements from? Is it possible to make them yourself, or would you recommend using only original solutions?

Also, your point about the unevenness of the carcass is very important to me. I will double-check whether the cabinets are perfectly level. Are there any practical tips for making door adjustments easier despite uneven floors or substrates?

I received the reinforcements from a carpentry workshop, where metal strips were bent and drilled to fit. However, this is really more of a DIY solution for cases where the hinges reach their limits.

To compensate for uneven floors, I recommend:
- Using adjustable furniture feet
- First leveling and aligning the cabinet using a long spirit level
- If necessary, placing washers under the feet to ensure everything is flush

Only when the cabinet is truly level can you adjust the doors precisely. Otherwise, all your efforts will be in vain.

I wonder if the frequent need to readjust the METOD doors is also due to a lack of tolerance in the door design or cabinet geometry. Wouldn't it make more sense to manufacture these more precisely from the start?

There are three adjustment screws on the METOD hinges: one for depth adjustment, one for lateral movement, and one for height adjustment.

The fact that there are so many adjustment options shows that corrections are necessary anyway – could this also be a sign that the basic fit is not optimal? Has anyone had experience with, for example, higher-quality doors (possibly from third-party suppliers) being easier to install, or are the difficulties generally related to METOD?

Good observation. I think METOD is a mass-produced product where some manufacturing tolerances inevitably cause minor fitting issues. High-quality doors made by skilled carpenters are usually more precise but also significantly more expensive. For home use, you often need to invest time in careful adjustments to achieve a good fit. So, it’s more of a trade-off between cost and effort.

A brief summary of the key points for perfect installation of METOD doors:

- First, attach the doors loosely, do not tighten screws immediately
- Check alignment using a spirit level or ruler
- The hinges have three adjustment screws: height, side, depth
- Adjust in the following order: first height, then side, then depth
- Consider reinforcement measures for large, heavy doors (reinforce hinges or add extra brackets)
- Align and level the cabinet precisely horizontally
- Tighten all screws at the end and check functionality

This approach ensures the best possible result using the prefabricated components.
