Hello everyone,
I recently bought a Billy bookshelf from IKEA and am not completely satisfied with the original hinges. They feel a bit flimsy, and I have the impression that the door stability suffers with frequent use. Therefore, I am considering replacing the hinges with more robust or better dampened models. Has anyone had experience upgrading the BILLY bookshelf hinges or knows alternative models that fit well and are easy to install? For me, increased durability and quieter door closing are especially important.
Can you recommend specific brands or types that are directly compatible or can be swapped with minimal effort? Or are there custom solutions that have proven effective? I appreciate any tips!

Soft-close hinges from Hettich replacedThat sounds interesting, but do you have specific data on load capacity or long-term testing? Just because it sounds better doesn’t automatically mean it’s more durable. I’m asking because some soft-close models tend to wear out quickly under continuous use. Also, it’s important to check whether the screw holes match those of the BILLY or if additional drilling is necessary.

whether the screw holes from the BILLY fit or if additional drilling is necessaryThat’s a good point! I’m wondering about the same thing. When replacing the door hinge, you shouldn’t drill too many extra holes into the sturdy side panels of the shelving unit to avoid weakening its structure. Are there any experience-based insights on whether standard soft-close or upgraded hinges fit directly, or if you definitely need replacement fittings made specifically for the BILLY?
I believe that before opting for unknown alternatives in such cases, one should carefully analyze the design of the hinges.

I would first check whether the hinges are exactly compatible in height and width before installing anything without consultation.
