Hello everyone,

I am currently facing the following issue: I want to install the IKEA Metod baseboards, but unfortunately our floor is not completely even – there are some minor irregularities in certain areas, and the floor is slightly wavy in places. My question is: How can I properly attach the IKEA Metod baseboards on uneven floors so that they are stable and fit cleanly, without visible gaps or unsightly openings?

I have already considered using spacers, special clips, or adjusting the baseboards themselves. How do you handle this in such cases? Are there any tips or tricks to attach baseboards flexibly yet securely?

I would appreciate any advice and experiences!

Hi,
with uneven floors, it often helps to fix the baseboards only at the stable points and fill the gaps with foam-like material or flexible seals. Alternatively, you can attach the baseboards using mounting adhesive that compensates for minor irregularities.

Hello Terodeo,

I’m happy to provide a more detailed answer, as this topic comes up frequently. With uneven floors, it’s important first to measure the exact location and extent of the irregularities. Here’s a suggestion on how to proceed:

- Check precisely where the uneven spots are using a long spirit level or a straight batten.
- At strongly uneven areas, you can use small wooden wedges or plastic shims as spacers before installation to stabilize the baseboard in the correct position.
- IKEA Metod baseboards are usually fixed with clips – you can place these selectively where the floor is stable.
- Between the clips, you can additionally secure the boards with construction adhesive or insert small flexible filler pieces to close gaps.
- For visible joints, you can touch up with white silicone sealant, which remains flexible and provides a clean finish.

The advantage of the clips is that they can often be adjusted so you don’t have to fix the baseboard everywhere, which compensates for unevenness. If you can adapt the baseboards to the clips, for example by lightly trimming the backside, this improves the fit.

I hope this helps!

Good tip! And to make the whole process a bit easier: just before installation, bend or adjust the baseboard slightly – the Metod boards are somewhat flexible. I always did it by filling uneven spots lightly with wooden shims and then set the baseboards on without any stress.

You don’t want the baseboards to wobble or rattle in the end, or the DIY project quickly ends on a sour note. 😅

Honestly, here’s how I see it: uneven floors and IKEA baseboards just don’t really go together if you want a clean finish.

I would recommend either modifying the baseboards a bit yourself or using completely different, more flexible baseboards. With the prefabricated clips and the rigid design of the Metod baseboards, you can’t expect miracles.

If you approach it smartly, you sand or rout the boards slightly on the contact side and keep testing how they fit best. Otherwise, gaps are inevitable – simply relying on adhesive, as some suggest, often results in unsightly and unstable outcomes.

I understand what you mean, but I believe the person asking should at least be trusted to achieve good results with some patience and the right approach.

No one has a perfectly level floor – and IKEA furniture is designed for everyday users after all. With a bit of care, some simple tools, and enough time, it’s possible to get very good results without having to completely redo everything.

Maybe it’s worth asking how severe the unevenness actually is, so more targeted advice can be given.
