Hello everyone,
I am planning to assemble some of the popular IKEA Billy bookshelves soon and would like to get a realistic estimate: How long does it typically take to fully assemble a Billy bookshelf? I mean the entire process, from unpacking, sorting the parts, assembling, to final positioning and adjustments.
I want to make sure I can plan realistically, especially if I need to assemble several shelves one after another. Are there differences depending on the shelf size or experience level? I look forward to your estimates and any tips on how to speed up or simplify the assembly process.

How long does it usually take to fully assemble a BILLY shelf? I mean from unpacking, sorting the parts, assembling, all the way to final adjustment and leveling.Hey, good question! In my experience, assembling a single BILLY shelf takes anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, depending on your level of experience.
If it’s your first time, I’d recommend planning for about an hour – unpacking, reading the instructions, and maybe a few moments of frustration ;-). If you’ve assembled furniture before, it usually goes faster.
And don’t forget to have a little fun with it, otherwise it feels much longer 🙂 So, no worries, you’ll manage!

I want to make sure I can plan realistically, especially when I need to assemble several shelves in a row. Are there differences depending on shelf size or experience?Good day,
It makes sense to consider some technical factors to answer your question in detail:
1. Shelf size: BILLY comes in various heights (approximately 80 cm to 202 cm (31 inches to 79 inches)). As the size and number of shelves increase, assembly time does not grow linearly; however, handling larger units is often more cumbersome, which leads to more time spent on aligning and adjusting.
2. Experience: Experienced assemblers who have built IKEA furniture before generally take less time, especially when interpreting the instructions and efficiently sorting the parts.
3. Tools and work environment: Having access to good screwdrivers, cordless drills, or similar tools can significantly reduce assembly time.
4. Number of shelves: When assembling multiple units of the same type, learning effects clearly come into play, reducing the total time needed per shelf.
Typical assembly times for experienced individuals range from 25 to 40 minutes per standard BILLY shelf. Beginners should estimate about 60 to 90 minutes for a single unit.
Which sizes and variants are you planning to assemble exactly? Then I could provide more precise advice.
From a straightforward perspective, one can say:
The BILLY shelf is a relatively simple piece of furniture with a manageable number of components. The assembly instructions are well organized, so the average build time reported in studies and reviews is usually between 30 and 60 minutes.
The actual time required clearly depends largely on preparation. This includes:
- Carefully sorting the screws and wooden parts before starting
- Having all tools ready
- Working on an ergonomic, level surface
The larger and more complex the individual shelf (e.g., with glass doors or a large number of shelves), the greater the effort involved. For the basic version alone, up to 45 minutes is realistic.

1. Unpack and sort the parts – allow 10–15 minutes. If you build continuously without breaks, it’s easy to lose track.
2. Study the instructions carefully – this often takes 5–10 minutes, especially for less experienced builders.
3. Actual assembly begins here. I recommend working step by step and checking after each stage to ensure everything is firmly in place.
4. Fine adjustments: Depending on the floor, the shelves may need some alignment, which takes additional time.
My tip: Have a cordless drill with a Phillips head bit ready—it saves a lot of time.
If you are assembling multiple shelves, be sure to schedule breaks; otherwise, concentration often suffers, leading to mistakes.
All in all, assembling a BILLY shelf typically takes between 45 and 75 minutes for the average DIYer.

Experience is important, as it makes the process faster.
For multiple shelves, you should allow at least half an hour per unit.
