ᐅ How can BILLY shelves be adapted to uneven walls?

Hello everyone,

I am currently facing the challenge of mounting my IKEA Billy shelves on a wall that is unfortunately not completely flat. The unevenness is not severe but noticeable enough that the shelves do not fit perfectly and sometimes wobble. Are there any proven methods or techniques to adjust and install Billy shelves on uneven walls so that they stand stable and level? Which materials are best suited, and what should be considered especially during the adjustment? I look forward to your tips and experiences!

I fully support the suggestions to use leveling shims and felt pads. In addition, I have observed the following with friends: if you mount a thin drywall or chipboard panel behind the shelf, you can very effectively conceal unevenness without it being noticeable. The shelf can then rest evenly on or be attached to this panel.

Just make sure that the wall mounting is strong enough, as the stability must not be compromised by the panel. If the shelf has some play, instead of forcing a perfectly flush, waterproof fit, you can use small spacers at the mounting points.

I fully agree with that. Sometimes less is more. The goal should always be to secure the shelf safely and functionally—not necessarily perfectly straight with millimeter precision.

In my opinion, too much effort is often spent because we let ideal expectations cause stress. A few wooden shims and a bit of flexibility during installation—and everything fits.

Felt pads and thin wooden corner pieces under the shelf often make a big difference. For the wall, a simple MDF board that has been sanded smooth beforehand can help.

For clarification: The challenge with BILLY shelves is the rigid back panel, which allows very little adjustment for uneven surfaces. Therefore, it is advisable to first measure the wall using a laser level to obtain an accurate profile of the irregularities before installation.

Afterwards, there are two possible approaches:

- Either install a flat leveling board (e.g., plywood or MDF, 6–10 mm (1/4–3/8 inch) thick) that is precisely fitted and secured,
- or use shim wedges on the backside of the shelf behind the mounting points to align the shelf with the wall.

When securing the shelf with screws, it is also recommended to use elongated holes or adjustable brackets to allow for minor adjustments. Consider again: How often do you plan to move the shelf? Because extensive modifications are only worthwhile if you are planning for the long term.
