Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into the care of my Ikea Brimnes furniture and would like to know if there are any specific cleaning tips for the surfaces of this series. The Brimnes series usually has a matte, melamine-coated surface, which I want to avoid damaging.

I am particularly interested in which cleaning agents are safe to use and if there are any special techniques to gently remove sticker residues or greasy fingerprints without making the surface dull or rough.

Perhaps someone has experience with the durability of these surfaces under frequent cleaning or knows common mistakes to avoid?

Thank you very much for your tips and advice!

Hello Elma67,

First of all, a warm welcome to the group! Regarding the cleaning of Ikea Brimnes surfaces, I can share some practical advice based on experience. Generally, furniture with melamine-coated surfaces is quite easy to maintain, but still requires some care.

- For regular cleaning, it’s best to use a soft, slightly damp microfiber cloth. This helps prevent scratches and keeps the matte finish intact.
- Avoid aggressive or abrasive cleaners, such as bleach, solvents, or all-purpose cleaners with strong detergents. These can damage or dull the coating.
- For stubborn stains like grease or adhesive residues, a mild multi-purpose cleaner or simple dishwashing detergent diluted in water usually works well. Use these sparingly and carefully.
- Important: Always wipe the surface dry after cleaning to prevent water spots.

One more tip: If you want to remove stickers, soak the area briefly with a damp cloth to loosen the adhesive residue. Never use sharp objects for scraping.

I hope this helps you. If you’d like, feel free to share how your Brimnes holds up over time—I’m interested to hear!

Hello Elma67,

I would like to add to GiRoyce’s advice and provide more details about the material properties of the Brimnes surfaces, which are made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) with a melamine resin coating. This is important for how you care for them.

- The melamine coating is relatively resistant to water damage, but constant exposure to moisture should be avoided because moisture can seep into the MDF at the edges, causing swelling.
- As already mentioned, microfiber cloths are ideal. I also recommend slightly dampening the cloth and, if there is noticeable dirt, gently wiping the surface multiple times with a lightly damp cloth and then drying it immediately.
- To remove sticky residues, a drop of isopropanol (rubbing alcohol) can be used, but sparingly and only applied to the cloth, not directly on the surface, to avoid damaging the melamine.
- In general, do not use abrasive sponges, as these can dull the smooth surface and cause fine scratches.

A common mistake is using aggressive all-purpose cleaners or soaking the surface.

Do you have specific stains or particular uses that might require special treatment? We can then discuss those more specifically.

I can confirm this from personal experience. I once had some rather old rubber marks on the cabinet fronts (because the kids had bumped their school backpacks against the fronts) and the isopropanol removed them very well without leaving any traces.

What I would like to add is to be patient when cleaning. Instead of rubbing hard, work gently; otherwise, the surface can quickly become slightly dull. I also find that good lighting helps when checking, to really see all residues that are often missed in dim light.

And: if you are ever unsure, test the cleaning method on an inconspicuous spot first. This helps avoid unpleasant surprises like discoloration or dull patches.
