Hello everyone,

I am facing the challenge of dismantling my Ikea Pax wardrobe as quickly and easily as possible. Some of the modules are quite large and heavy, and I especially want to avoid wasting time or damaging parts during disassembly. I am particularly interested in whether anyone knows proven methods for carefully but efficiently removing individual components such as shelves, doors, and side panels.

Are there any practical tips for disconnecting the fasteners or recommended sequences that have proven effective in practice? For example, special tools or specific settings on a screwdriver or cordless drill that make the job easier?

I would appreciate any helpful and practical advice!

It’s best to remove the doors first, then the floors, and finally detach the side walls. A Phillips screwdriver or a suitable bit attachment for a cordless drill makes the job easier. Avoid losing too many screws at once, as this will make reassembling easier later.

First, it would be helpful to know which Pax version you have – the disassembly process can vary slightly depending on the model and year of manufacture. In general, I recommend the following structured approach:

- Remove the doors: You need to unlock the upper rails, which can be done either by gently lifting or pressing a clip, depending on the hinge type. Important: remove the doors carefully to avoid bending the hinges.

- Detach shelves and back panels: Shelves are usually just hooked in or secured with a few screws. Back panels are often simply slotted in; use a spatula carefully to pry them loose.

- Unscrew the side panels: This is only possible after removing the shelves and interior fittings.

Regarding tools – a good cordless drill with adjustable torque is useful to prevent over-tightening screws. A suitable bit with a magnetic tip speeds up the work. However, avoid removing fasteners purely electrically without experience, as this can lead to splintering.

The key points are:
- Follow the proper order
- Handle the hinges gently
- Keep track of the screws carefully

If you want, I can also prepare a checklist for you. What are the dimensions of your Pax, and how heavy are the modules? That would help me give more targeted advice.

Thanks for the tip! My Pax is a standard model with particleboard frame, dimensions about 100x236x58 cm (40x93x23 inches), manufactured in 2014.

I have a cordless drill with torque settings, so that should be fine.

In general, I’m also interested in whether the back panels are removed before or after the shelves – and if the large parts are better handled by two people. Especially the sturdy back panels worry me a bit when removing them.

Thanks for any ideas and tips!

The order is indeed crucial for an efficient disassembly: first remove the doors, then the floors, followed by the back panels, and finally the side walls.

Regarding the back panels: these are usually fixed only with small clips and are not load-bearing elements. They should be carefully loosened using a prying tool to avoid damage. It is advisable to perform this step with two people if possible, as the back panel is relatively large and cumbersome.

Additionally, it helps not to fully remove the screws right away, but to loosen them just enough until all screws on one side are loosened, and only then carefully remove the elements. This avoids misalignment and unnecessary exertion.

A tip for speeding up the process: If you remove screws using a magnetic bit, you avoid having to pick up each screw individually. Simply pick up the screws with the bit while loosening them and place them directly into a container.

Regarding the back panel: Sometimes the back panel can be rolled or bent intact if it does not contain heavy reinforcements. However, be careful not to bend it too sharply, as this can cause permanent damage.

Finally, if needed, mark where each part belongs – especially for doors and interior elements. This saves a lot of time during assembly later.
