Hello everyone,

I have some IKEA Platsa furniture in my apartment and am considering how to use these modules more flexibly. The system’s adaptability seems ideal for making the best use of space, but I’m missing some concrete ideas on how to creatively and functionally combine the modules beyond the usual cabinet and storage solutions.

I’m interested in:
- What unusual uses have you discovered for Platsa?
- What tips and tricks do you have for optimizing space with this system?
- Are there any innovative modifications, such as multifunctional furniture, that you have implemented?

It would also be important for me to hear about any experiences with stability when using altered constructions or custom adjustments.

I look forward to exchanging ideas and getting lots of inspiration!

Hi Rikelo,

PLATSA is truly a chameleon among furniture! 😄 For example, I once created a small home office using PLATSA: a low cabinet as a bench, next to it an open shelf for books and folders – all on casters, so you can easily rearrange it when needed.

A friend even built a seating unit with padded cushions on top, basically a kind of multifunctional bench for the living room.

Important: The modules are quite sturdy, but you have to be careful with the connecting points, otherwise it wobbles quickly. Still, the flexibility is the biggest advantage. So, I highly recommend getting creative and giving it a try!

In addition to the main topic, PLATSA systems often lack careful planning to perfectly fit the modules. Here is a brief guide to help use PLATSA flexibly and safely:

- Measure carefully and create room sketches.
- Plan the modular units to create both closed storage options and open shelves.
- Use combinations of different heights and depths for varied functions (storage, seating, room dividers).
- For stability: always use the connecting brackets and fix modules to the wall or floor if needed.

This way, you can also design custom wardrobe systems or half-height room dividers that provide storage while structuring spaces.

Additionally, installing lighting or inserts made from other materials (e.g., wooden boards as shelves) can further enhance the individual character.

What I personally find great about PLATSA is the ability to create your own comfort zone while addressing small challenges like awkward room corners in a customized way. At first, I was a bit doubtful and unsure if the modules would be versatile enough to use, especially regarding stability.

After a few days of setting up, I now have a kind of room divider in my living room that also separates my small creative workspace. For this, I equipped some of the modules with doors to store materials, and left others open for plants and decorations – this keeps the room from feeling dull and makes me feel comfortable.

Sometimes it really takes courage to rethink existing furniture. For anyone feeling similarly uncertain: just give it a try, it can hardly go wrong!

Regarding the use of PLATSA furniture in multipurpose areas:

I recommend first clarifying the intended use and the spatial conditions. The stability of custom solutions largely depends on proper fastening and assembly.

- For multifunctional furniture, for example, cabinets and shelves can be combined to create seating areas with storage underneath.
- The modules have variable depth, which is helpful when planning room dividers or dressers.
- It is advisable to use existing fastening points and, if necessary, add brackets or screws to secure the construction.

For custom modifications, please keep in mind: distribute weight evenly, avoid overloading modules, and consider load-bearing points.

This is an important tip. I would like to add that for maximum stability, especially with complex PLATSA assemblies, using the original hardware from IKEA is essential.

Additionally, the following points must be considered:
- The weight of the stored items significantly affects the durability of the connections.
- For heights above approximately 2 meters (6.5 feet), securing the unit to the wall is not only recommended but mandatory for safety reasons.
- The modular design also allows for horizontal extension, where checking the tipping stability is critical.

These points help ensure the furniture can be used safely and flexibly without risk.
