Hello everyone, I have an IKEA Kallax shelving unit that I have filled with quite heavy books. I have noticed that the shelf wobbles the most when it is fully loaded, especially when I walk past it or touch it. The unit stands on a solid floor, but the lateral movement is clearly noticeable. My question is: How can I reinforce my Kallax shelf so that it remains stable even under full load? Are there proven methods or reinforcements that can be added without damaging the appearance of the shelf? Shelf supports, wall fastenings, or other constructions – I am open to all suggestions that are practical to implement and provide long-term stability.

I would recommend securing the shelf to the wall if this hasn’t been done yet. Simply use the supplied brackets and add additional supporting plates at the bottom to reduce wobbling.

Hello Ioango, your description is quite accurate – Kallax shelves offer a certain flexibility in their construction, as most modules are simply slotted or screwed together. To reinforce them, you can consider the following steps:

1. Wall fixing: Screw the shelf to the wall using brackets. It is important to use appropriate anchors for the wall type. This prevents tipping.

2. Cross braces: Replace the cardboard back panel inside with a significantly sturdier board, such as a thin plywood panel (e.g., 6 mm (1/4 inch)), to prevent twisting.

3. Base plate: If the shelf stands on floors with small unevenness, support pads or adjustable feet can help.

What is the approximate load per compartment? This information will help suggest suitable reinforcements.

Thanks for asking. The books weigh about 12-15 kg (26-33 lbs) per compartment. There are 5 compartments in total, but the load is uneven since I use some more heavily than others.

I have only placed it loosely so far, without attaching it to the wall. I will try that first.

I haven’t replaced the back panel cardboard yet, but I also thought it wouldn’t add much to the stability.

The best way to stabilize Kallax shelves is by combining wall mounting with reinforcement of the back panel.

The back panel is often just a thin hardboard sheet, which provides reasonable lateral stiffness to the structure. Replacing it with a 6–8 mm (1/4–5/16 inch) thick plywood sheet, securely screwed in from the inside, significantly reduces wobbling.

When mounting to the wall, make sure to use anchors of sufficient size. For drywall, for example, you need to use special hollow wall anchors to properly handle the tensile forces.

I’m familiar with this issue as well; the wobbling when fully loaded is really annoying, especially when there are children in the house or the shelf is in a frequently used area. Securing it to the wall definitely reduces a lot of concern.

You can also attach small angle brackets to the inner corners, which are barely visible but greatly help to stabilize the shelf. This makes it feel genuinely reinforced.

I hope this helps you a bit—I was able to significantly reduce the movement of my shelf using this method.
