Hello everyone,

I recently bought a KALLAX shelving unit and noticed during assembly that some of the shelves were slightly warped. The distortion isn’t extreme, but it is definitely noticeable and visible, which concerns me regarding stability and appearance. My question is: Should I return the shelving unit or the shelves, or is this slight warping common for KALLAX furniture and does it settle with use? Are there any experiences about when this is a valid reason for return and how IKEA usually handles such cases? Thanks for your opinions and advice!

If the floors appear visibly warped, I would recommend returning them. IKEA usually replaces them without any issues.

A slight warping is sometimes normal, but if it is noticeable and bothersome, return it. IKEA is accommodating when it comes to defects.

Hello Claas,

Here is my view: KALLAX shelves are generally quite sturdy, but slight warping can occur due to wood moisture or internal stresses from storage.

1. Check if the warping is only superficial or if it affects the shelf’s stability.
2. Try storing the shelves flat with a light weight on top and observe them over two or three days.
3. If the warping remains or gets worse, this is clearly a defect.

IKEA accepts returns for material defects, even if the warping is not severe. I recommend taking photos and discussing the issue directly at the store.

Summary:
- slight warping can often resolve itself
- permanent warping = return

Hope this helps!

In my experience, IKEA accepts returns for visible material defects even after assembly, provided the product’s functionality is not affected and the original packaging is still available.

However, warping of shelves in the KALLAX series can be influenced by storage conditions. Slight warping is possible but does not constitute a manufacturing defect as long as acceptable tolerances are met.

It is important to report any defects early to avoid misunderstandings.

Tip: For your next purchase, check the quality on site and, if necessary, choose a different box.

This is exactly the point I’m questioning. What are the acceptable tolerances for KALLAX? Does IKEA officially specify any dimensional tolerance for deformation?

I believe that if the customer cannot store or handle the product properly and the warping is due to natural material properties, then a return should not necessarily be required. However, it is important to clearly define when a return is justified.

It would be interesting to know if anyone here has had official correspondence with IKEA regarding such cases.
