Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I bought the BILLY shelving unit from IKEA and installed the doors. However, I noticed that these doors are quite difficult to open quietly. Often, there are loud popping sounds or unpleasant squeaking, which can be quite annoying in daily use.

Does anyone have experience or tips on how to make BILLY doors open more quietly? I would like to know if there are specific techniques, lubricants, or perhaps replacement parts that could help make the doors quieter and easier to open.

I look forward to your helpful advice and possibly some recommendations on maintaining the hinges or dampers. Thank you in advance!

Hello danalo,

First of all: Your question is very well formulated and shows that you are seriously addressing the issue.

Basically, the noise when opening and closing BILLY doors often depends on the hinges and their adjustment. Usually, it is enough to slightly readjust the hinges so that the doors operate more smoothly without any creaking or squeaking. It also helps to regularly treat the hinges with a suitable lubricant (e.g., silicone spray or special MoS2 grease). It is better to avoid WD-40, as it is more of a raw oil and can cause problems over time.

Additionally, the door panel might be slightly stressed if it does not fit exactly. In this case, carefully realigning the door and checking the small plastic buffers or stops that IKEA uses on some BILLY door models can help. Replace them if necessary or add felt pads for protection.

If you like, I can also send you a step-by-step guide on how to adjust the hinges.

Good luck!

While this is a common recommendation, I wonder if the lubricant is truly that effective, or if the hinge mechanism itself is actually the weak point.

Furthermore, how exactly does silicone spray affect the sliding surfaces? Are there any studies or user reports demonstrating that it really reduces noise?

Sometimes the material quality of BILLY doors can also cause noise, especially with the more affordable versions. Replacing the hinges with higher-quality ones might be a more sustainable solution in the long run.

Spray silicone spray or graphite powder on the door hinges, then open and close the door gently to distribute the lubricant evenly.
If it creaks regularly, adjust the hinges – loosen the screws, align the door, and tighten them again.
If the issue is with the stops, install felt pads or dampers. Done.

Hello danalo,

I would like to explain in more detail what makes the BILLY doors open silently.

1. Hinge Adjustment:
BILLY doors usually come with simple clip-on hinges, which can still be adjusted precisely. It is important that the door is perfectly aligned vertically and that the horizontal gaps to adjacent surfaces are correct.

2. Lubrication:
As alvalo already mentioned, I recommend silicone spray or graphite. However, be careful with oil-based oils and greases as they can attract dirt and cause long-term problems.

3. Dampers:
Some of the quiet doors have damper stops (soft-close or similar features). If your doors do not have dampers, you can add neutral dampers with adhesive pads. These prevent slamming and cracking noises.

4. Material and Cleaning:
Especially with BILLY, the door frames are usually made of particleboard or MDF with a melamine coating. Dirt or small crumbs in the hinge areas can increase friction. Regular cleaning with a dry cloth does no harm.

Finally, my question: Do your doors have existing dampers installed, or do you have purely mechanical hinges? That would be important to know in order to recommend further steps.

Thanks in advance for the quick and helpful responses!

@Noahlu: My BILLY doors don’t have dampers, just the simpler metal hinges.

@LuMarcel43: You’re right that a better hinge could make sense, but I’d like to try optimizing the existing ones first before considering modification or replacement.

Could you explain how to properly adjust the door and which screws need to be loosened? Sometimes I get the impression the door is slightly misaligned, which causes noise when opening.

I’m reasonably handy and want to avoid causing any damage, but I’m not completely clear on the exact adjustment mechanism on these hinges.
