Hello everyone, I am currently having issues with the door locks on my IKEA Hemnes wardrobe – they stick and can only be opened or closed with considerable force. The mechanism doesn’t seem completely broken, but the latch catches internally or doesn’t engage properly. It feels like the material may be swelling slightly or the alignment is off. Does anyone have practical tips on how to address this sticking of the door locks on Hemnes without having to disassemble the wardrobes or carry out extensive repairs? It would also be helpful to know if these problems are common and whether special lubricants, adjustments, or small tools might help. Thanks in advance!

Hello Thorbenso3, the issue with sticking door locks on HEMNES models is not uncommon. Often, a simple cleaning of the lock grooves is enough. Dust or small particles can easily prevent the latch from engaging properly. I also recommend using sufficient lubricant, but please avoid oil; use a permanent dry lubricant instead (e.g., silicone spray) to prevent dust attraction. Additionally, check if the door is properly aligned, as any misalignment can affect the lock. Small adjustments to the hinges can work wonders if needed. If you like, I can provide you with a step-by-step guide that I have used several times before.

It is best to first remove the lock, then clean it with compressed air and spray it with silicone lubricant. After that, reinstall the lock and adjust the door. This usually resolves any sticking issues.

With HEMNES door locks, jamming is often caused by two factors: material shrinkage due to moisture or mechanical deformation during installation or use. First, it is necessary to determine whether the lock unit or the door panel is the cause. Recommendations:
- Remove the lock and visually inspect it for damage
- Carefully deburr mechanical parts using fine sandpaper
- Use standardized dry lubricant (silicone or PTFE), avoid oily substances
- Check hinges and readjust if necessary to prevent misalignment
- For particularly stubborn cases, replacement parts are available from IKEA

This procedure is efficient without having to completely dismantle the construction.

That sounds reasonable. I actually felt that the latch is sometimes stiff, especially when there is dust in the gaps.

The tip about using compressed air and silicone spray seems clean and sensible.

I have been hesitant to remove the lock because, on one hand, it’s some effort, and on the other hand, I’m afraid of incorrect reassembly.

Does anyone have experience with whether the lock unit in HEMNES is easy to remove and reinstall without needing much realignment?

Are there any critical points during removal where you need to be especially careful? I don’t want to cause any permanent damage.

Yes, the lock can be removed fairly easily. You usually only need a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the small screws. Important points:
- Do not tighten the screws too much when reinstalling
- Test the latch multiple times during reinstallation to ensure it engages properly
- Afterwards, adjust the door on the hinges if it doesn’t close smoothly

Important: Sometimes the plastic parts of the locking mechanism can be a bit brittle, so be careful when loosening to avoid breaking anything. If you’re unsure, it’s better to only partially loosen and try using a dry lubricant before fully removing it.
