EliastuHello everyone,
I recently have a Kallax shelf from Ikea at home and would like to upgrade it a bit, especially regarding the handles. My specific question is: Are there any special handles designed by Ikea for the Kallax system or made specifically for it that I might also find at a hardware store? I want to avoid buying generic handles that might not fit well or could negatively affect the appearance.
Does anyone know of suitable products from hardware stores or generally have tips on which handles work well for Kallax, particularly considering easy installation and compatibility with the relatively thin fronts? I appreciate any help!

The doors and inserts that are available sometimes have handles, but they are often recessed or made of plastic.

I want to avoid buying generic handles that might not fit well later or could spoil the overall look. The issue is that the thickness of the Kallax fronts often doesn’t match standard handles, especially if drilling is required. You’ll find many handles at hardware stores, but few that are suitable for the thin particleboard. I would recommend handle bars or drawer pulls that can be glued on, which avoids drilling damage. Of course, some might debate whether that looks “stylish” enough, but it is practical.
What I find interesting: has anyone tried whether Ikea’s box handles (for example, those used on Kallax boxes) can also be mounted on doors? That could be an affordable solution.
That’s brilliant, thanks for the tip from theo63! 😃
I recently made exactly this kind of modification: I looked for handle strips at the hardware store and found a few that are really easy to install without drilling! For anyone worried about the look: there are some very stylish options in wood finish or stainless steel that look very modern and fit perfectly with Kallax.
Kallax is a great system that gets a real upgrade with these handles, and you save yourself the trouble of finding separate furniture handles that don’t fit. I can only recommend giving a few handle strips a try – it’s really fun, and if you want, you can remove them anytime!
Give it a try, it’s worth it! 🙂

I’d like to give you a brief overview of which types of handles work well for Kallax doors and compartments, and whether you’ll find suitable options at hardware stores.
1. Standard furniture handles with screw fittings: Here, the thickness of the door is critical. Kallax doors are often only about 1.5 cm (0.6 inches) thick. Standard handles from hardware stores are usually designed for screwing through thicker panels, so screws may be too long or the spacing might not match.
2. Handle bars: These are flat and usually glued or screwed on (using shorter screws). Advantage: Easily customizable and visually modern.
3. Push-to-open mechanisms: These do not require handles at all. Recommended if you prefer a clean look.
Regarding hardware stores: There are definitely handle bars and some individual handles that might fit, but not the full Ikea range. Ikea itself usually offers indirectly suitable handles for Kallax—such as fabric or plastic box handles, which can be repurposed.
I recommend measuring the thickness of the front panel before buying, and if needed, getting shorter screws or checking that the handles won’t damage coated surfaces. Adhesive options are also a good alternative, especially if you want to stay flexible.
In summary: Special Kallax handles are not officially available at hardware stores, but with the right choice, you can still find well-fitting solutions and significantly improve the look!

There’s no specific Kallax accessory available at hardware stores, but there are alternatives. That sums it up pretty well. However, I think it’s important to say: anyone expecting a Kallax “revelation” at a hardware store will be disappointed. Too often I see customers who think there’s a “one-size-fits-all” solution, especially with such a clearly designed system like Kallax.

I want to avoid buying generic handles that later don’t fit well or spoil the look.In my opinion, the problem mainly stems from the lack of standardized dimensions for Kallax handles. The standards for typical hardware store handles assume significantly thicker fronts. Stability of the mounting is especially critical with wood-based panels on a thin substrate.
In short: Ikea itself creates a certain consistency in design for the Kallax series that is rarely matched by generic handles from hardware stores. So, if you value an exact appearance, it’s better to buy from Ikea or modify with some DIY skills.
