Hello everyone,

I recently moved with my KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA and now I’m facing a small issue that’s quite frustrating: the doors I installed on the unit no longer close properly and don’t fit flush against the cabinet edges. Everything is new, and I haven’t made any significant changes to the doors or the unit itself.

I suspect this might be related to the new spatial conditions, slight warping, or a minimal dimensional deviation in the floor or wall. Are there any tips or tools here in the forum that could help me adjust or fix the doors without having to buy new ones or rebuild the whole shelving unit? I’m thinking that small wedges, adjustment screws, or similar modifications might help.

Has anyone had experience with this? I look forward to your advice and suggestions!

Best regards,
kihannes

Interesting question!

I honestly wonder why IKEA furniture always seems to require some kind of workaround instead of simply demanding better quality and precise fitting. The KALLAX doors are a prime example, to me, of a half-baked solution that fails with every move or even the slightest change in the environment.

Maybe it’s time to replace the entire shelving unit with a more stable, perhaps modular system? Or is the goal to keep the effort as minimal as possible?

First, measure carefully to check if the shelf is level. Often, the floor is uneven, which can cause the doors to misalign. A spirit level can help with this.

Hello kihannes,

I am familiar with the issue of KALLAX doors not fitting properly after moving. Often, this is due to slightly uneven floors or walls in the new home. IKEA shelves don’t always offer flexible door adjustment options.

My suggestion is to first check whether the shelf unit itself is perfectly plumb using a spirit level. If the unit is slightly tilted or not aligned properly, it can affect the door fit.

Secondly, the KALLAX doors have small screws on the hinges that allow for minor adjustments, especially horizontal and vertical alignment. If that’s not enough, small wooden strips or felt pads attached to the inside of the door can help increase the clearance slightly.

If that still doesn’t solve the problem, thin plastic wedges can be placed between the shelf and the door frame to make closing easier.

Feel free to let me know how your shelf is positioned and what you have tried so far, so I can offer more specific advice.

If your doors don’t fit properly, it could be because they warped during transport.

KALLAX doors are actually quite simple in design, but since they are made of wood, they react to moisture and temperature – sometimes they warp slightly.

I once installed door hinges on my shelf that allow for a bit more adjustment – this often helps!

And if none of that works: a small trick is to use felt pads on the edges – this helps the doors close more easily without sticking 🙂

Why is it always necessary to use some kind of trick with IKEA furniture?

That is quite an interesting point, but I would argue that the main issue with KALLAX lies more in the design and minimal tolerances rather than the overall quality.

Especially with untreated wood or particleboard used in KALLAX, the dimensions and stability are often not perfectly precise, which can quickly lead to problems depending on the installation location. The doors offer little adjustment room, so using appropriate hinges or additional modifications is almost unavoidable.

I recommend systematically checking the door hinges. IKEA also offers some accessory parts for KALLAX to improve adjustments.

It would be helpful if you could post the exact dimensions and type of hinges, so the issue can be addressed more specifically.
