Hello everyone, I’m planning to buy new Billy bookcases, but I want to gather good information beforehand to choose the easiest-to-maintain option. Specifically, I’m interested in which version or surface finish of Billy bookcases is easiest to clean and least prone to scratches, stains, or water marks in everyday use. It’s important to me that the bookcase does not show signs of wear too quickly after extended use and that I don’t have to constantly use special cleaning products. Does anyone have experience with which Billy bookcases are actually the easiest to maintain? I would also appreciate tips on cleaning and care! Thanks in advance.

I completely understand the concerns about ease of maintenance. Especially if you don’t have much time for intensive cleaning, melamine shelves are very practical. I once had a lacquered beech Billy shelf, which quickly got scratched and stained, and that often annoyed me. Now, I’ve had a melamine-coated one for 2 years, and I feel much more relaxed when using it. But as Garry mentioned, you still need to be careful with sharp objects.

Melamine seems like a good alternative that really reduces the annoying issue of unsightly stains or scratches. I would be interested to know if anyone has tips on how to protect the surface despite melamine, for example with suitable maintenance products?
Melamine is inherently easy to maintain and does not require special cleaning agents. Regular cleaning products are sufficient, and even harsh chemicals can damage the surface. It is important to wipe up liquids promptly to prevent the edges from swelling. A small tip: In heavily used areas, felt pads can be attached to the underside of the shelves to protect them.

Additionally, one could consider using shelf inserts or boxes to reduce direct wear on the surface. This keeps the surface looking newer for longer and makes cleaning easier, as it is simpler to clean removable or slideable boxes rather than the shelf surface itself.
Thank you all for the detailed answers. To summarize, it seems that melamine-coated Billy shelves are the best option for easy maintenance, especially if they are cleaned regularly and carefully and protected from heavy loads. I will also follow the suggestions about felt pads and shelf liners. If anyone has additional cleaning tips or comments on durability, I would be glad to hear them.
