Hello everyone,

I have a rather specific question and hope for your experience or advice: How can I secure Ikea Besta furniture against tipping over with small children? My daughter is just under two years old and very active. Since the Besta units in our living room are quite tall and sometimes hold heavy items, I’m concerned she might climb on them or that the furniture could tip over.

What mounting or securing options are available that actually work in practice? I’m particularly interested if anyone has experience with the original Ikea mounting kits or if other methods are safer or more recommendable. Any tips on installation, stabilization, or alternative furniture arrangements to reduce the risk would be great.

Thanks in advance for your input!

You should stack less densely and instead arrange things more openly, that way there is much less stress.

That’s a good point, thanks! My apartment is actually quite small, so there isn’t much room to rearrange. My Besta cabinets are already fairly full, but I haven’t overloaded them with decorative items on top. My main issue is really on the free-standing wall, which I can’t completely rebuild, and so far I have only partially installed the mountings.

Maybe it would be helpful to know about alternative securing systems beyond the standard IKEA anchors. A friend mentioned furniture restraints that basically “anchor” the cabinet to the floor – does anyone know about these and whether they work well with Besta?

Thank you for the clarification, this will help to provide more targeted advice: If fixing to the wall is challenging or not possible in all locations, I recommend the following:

- Floor anchors: There are special angle brackets or corner braces that can be secured to the floor and screwed to the furniture. These can significantly reduce the risk of tipping by counteracting the torque at the base.
- Furniture legs with anchors: Some manufacturers offer furniture legs that can be additionally screwed in to improve stability – this way, the cabinets are further secured.
- Connecting multiple Besta units: If you place several modules side by side, secure them together using cross braces or connectors. This helps to distribute forces during tipping attempts and makes the entire assembly more stable.

Important: Whatever solution you choose, the materials must be rated for the weight involved (strong mounting brackets, appropriate screws and anchors).

The original Ikea fixings are excellent but often not sufficient when the room layout is complex.

Absolutely!
At home, in addition to wall anchors (which are still the best option), I also installed clip screws at the bottom. They are almost invisible and provide extra stability.

The advantage is also that our children can still play around the furniture, but the cabinet stays firmly in place.

A little tip: If you have tradespeople at your home, you can have this done professionally and quickly 😉

I think it’s great how everyone here helps out with different perspectives! One thing I want to emphasize: no matter which safety device you choose, make sure to closely supervise the child. Sometimes children try to tip over furniture because they’re seeking attention or just exploring. A combination of technical safety measures and proper upbringing seems ideal to me.

I also secured our Besta unit, but what helped most was talking with my son: showing understanding, distracting him, and providing safe play areas. The furniture is now secure, and my son climbs on it less often in a dangerous way.

I mounted the Besta using the IKEA wall brackets, and they hold perfectly.

Fully agree! For me, the IKEA wall brackets are the ultimate solution. No fuss, quick to install, and reliable. If you can only do one thing, this is the best choice.

Also, they are very simple if you ever need to move or want to try something different. Just unscrew them and you’re done. But yes, drilling into the wall is absolutely essential!

And for those who can’t drill, you can at least gain some stability using furniture wedges and non-slip mats.
