Good morning everyone, I hope you can help me.
I own an IKEA Malm chest of drawers that I want to disassemble without using any tools because I am traveling and don’t have any tools with me. I am especially concerned about the individual drawers and the side panels – I want to transport the chest as compactly as possible and later reassemble it without losing screws or causing significant damage.
My question is: How can I safely and easily take apart a Malm chest of drawers without tools? Are there any hidden mechanisms that can be manually released or special techniques to separate the parts?
I would really appreciate detailed tips or experiences, including things I should definitely avoid. Thanks in advance!

Wow, cool idea to disassemble the dresser without using any tools! 🙂
If you manage to remove the drawers, try gently prying the side panels loose with your hands. Sometimes the joints in IKEA furniture are designed with a little bit of play. That’s pretty exciting, isn’t it? You’ve got this!
Good luck, and let us know how your first attempts go!

For clarification: A Malm dresser consists of several components, which are usually connected with screws, dowels, and sometimes wooden strips.
Without tools, there is no official way to detach these connections, as screws can only be removed with the appropriate tools.
The drawers can be pulled out, but the side panels and the back panel are firmly fixed with screws or nails.
It is possible to remove the drawers individually without tools, but tools are required to disassemble the main frame itself.
If you are willing to take the risk of damage, some connections can sometimes be pried apart by applying force, but this is not recommended.

You can often simply pull out the drawers and then carefully release the runnersThanks for the tip. Do you mean by "carefully release the runners" that the slides can be detached without tools? Or are you referring to the screws on the sides of the runners?
I want to avoid damaging the runners or the drawers themselves as much as possible, in case I cannot fully dismantle the cabinet.
Hello,
I’ll explain based on my experience with IKEA furniture, especially the Malm dressers. You can actually remove the drawers without any tools; they usually pull out completely, and there are often stoppers that you can easily lift or press to release the drawer. This works without tools.
The side panels, on the other hand, are attached with screws that cannot be removed without tools because there are no snap fittings or clips.
If you want to manage completely without tools, I would recommend just removing the drawers and transporting the dresser like that.
In theory, you can also partially pull the dresser apart, but this often leads to damage, for example to the wood edges or dowels.
If you have more questions, feel free to ask.
