The main concerns are handling the drawer units, disassembling the furniture pieces, and protecting them from damage. My question is: What is the best way to manage Malm furniture during a move to minimize both the effort of assembly and disassembly as well as protecting the furniture itself? Are there any specific techniques or helpful tips to transport the furniture as scratch-free and safely as possible? I’m looking forward to your experiences and practical advice!
Hello @baluciano, I can really relate to your situation – Malm furniture is nice, but moving it can often be quite stressful. What helps me is to first completely empty all the drawers and then line them with stretch wrap or packing paper to prevent items from shifting during transport. I also often put newspapers inside to prevent rattling. It’s really important to remove the handles as well to avoid any breakage.
I recommend using moving blankets or old blankets to place between the individual parts. It’s also important to allow plenty of time for reassembly because rushing often leads to mistakes. Good luck!

As an additional note: When handling the Malm furniture, it is especially important to clearly label and safely store the connecting elements (e.g., wooden dowels, metal fasteners). It is advisable to keep screws and small parts in labeled zip bags, which can then be attached to the corresponding piece of furniture.
Furthermore, you should establish an order for disassembly, packing, and transport to ensure a logical and smooth reassembly later. Padding edges with blankets or bubble wrap significantly reduces the risk of scratches or dents caused by uneven surfaces.
Although this is a common trick, I recommend using plain packing paper instead of newspapers, as the ink can transfer.

Hey @baluciano! 🙂 Malm furniture is about as popular to move as socks disappearing in the washing machine – but you can manage it! 😂
My advice: if possible, take the large pieces apart into smaller parts, like removing drawers and unscrewing shelves. Protect the furniture well with blankets and bubble wrap. And hey, don’t forget to keep the screws in small bags—definitely don’t leave them loose around the house!
For an easier reassembly, I sometimes write a short guide noting where each screw goes. Otherwise, it quickly turns into a puzzle ;-) Have fun with the move and remember: even if it gets stressful, stay calm! 😉

In this context, I always question whether it really makes sense to completely disassemble the Malm furniture or if there are alternatives. Taking the furniture apart always carries the risk of damaged joints or increased time requirements.
One option would be to transport the furniture as securely as possible using protective covers and padding, without fully disassembling it. This reduces the risk of incorrect reassembly and saves time. Of course, the prerequisite is that the moving van or truck is large enough.
Are there already any ideas regarding the transport vehicle? That might be a helpful basis for further planning.

Hello everyone! This is such an exciting topic!!! I moved last week myself and had two Malm dressers to deal with. 🙂
My insider tip: Always make sure to secure screws properly – it takes a bit of time to organize small bags and masking tape for them, but it’s totally worth it! And hey, even if it’s annoying, it’s better to fully disassemble the furniture; it makes carrying and transporting much easier and less stressful.
My highlight was that at least I didn’t have any damage to the furniture – and the joy of assembling it in the new home was simply great. So: don’t get discouraged and take it step by step!!!
That’s true, but a careful disassembly gives me much more confidence that nothing will get damaged. 🙂
