DijovianHello everyone,
I am currently facing the challenge of adapting my Ikea Hemnes furniture to various changing living situations. Since my living space and usage scenarios often change (due to moving, job changes, or evolving family needs), I am looking for flexible ways to modify or reconfigure these pieces easily and with minimal effort.
I am especially interested in practical tips and suggestions for making the furniture both sturdy and adaptable—whether through certain modifications, additional accessories, or creative uses. Perhaps you also have experience with creating modular connecting elements or know which HEMNES components are particularly suitable for adjustments.
In short: How can I flexibly adapt Ikea HEMNES furniture to changing living conditions to use it optimally and as long as possible despite varying requirements? I look forward to your expert advice!

Hello Dijovian,
This happens to be a topic I know very well! The HEMNES series is naturally quite modular, but I’ll give you a few structured tips to help you stay flexible:
- Check modular additions: Use extra shelves or drawer inserts that can be easily added or removed.
- Adjust connectors: When putting furniture pieces together, it can help to replace screws and fasteners with quick-release or snap connectors – this makes reconfiguring faster and neater.
- Vary heights: Use individual HEMNES dressers (e.g., 3- or 6-drawer models) and arrange them offset, which adds flexibility to your storage.
- Change colors and finishes: For the white HEMNES furniture, you can paint drawer fronts or cover them with adhesive film to quickly change the style without having to buy new pieces.
Just make sure to keep stability in mind when altering the structure. Especially if you plan to stack or use furniture differently, reviewing the original assembly instructions helps to avoid exceeding weight limits.
I hope this helps!

When assembling furniture, it can be helpful to replace screws and connectors with quick-release fasteners or plug-in connectorsExactly, that makes modifications much easier.
Additionally: swap HEMNES legs for casters to make the pieces mobile.

Jokes aside – I removed the doors from my HEMNES cabinet and added adjustable storage boxes inside. This way, I can change the layout depending on my needs.
Also, magnetic hooks or storage baskets on the sides are very useful because you can easily move them around when you need more storage space or want to store something different.
In short: not just remodeling, but also upgrading with smart accessories helps bring more flexibility – and all of this without heavy tools. 😉
I can easily understand how challenging it can be to adapt furniture to changing situations. It was similar for me when my household circumstances changed.
This warning is really important. It also helps to consider how long the current adjustment should last and whether you are making temporary or permanent alterations during the renovation.
My advice is to avoid damaging the furniture during any renovation and to carefully store the original parts. This way, you can always revert back and stay flexible for use in other living situations.
Even if you feel stuck, taking a step back and rethinking the solution can bring new ideas. Good luck, and feel free to share how it goes!
