Hello everyone, I have an IKEA KALLAX shelf unit that I securely fixed to the wall to ensure a safe and stable piece of furniture. However, I still notice that the shelf slightly wobbles or has a bit of play, especially when I shake it or place something inside. I’m curious if any of you have had similar experiences and if the wobbling occurs even with wall mounting. Perhaps there are specific causes, installation errors, or additional reinforcements that could help make the shelf completely stable. I would appreciate any tips or shared experiences!

Yes, that often happens. Check the wall brackets and whether they are firmly secured. Sometimes the screws loosen a bit.

The wobbling can have several causes. Often it is because the wall fastenings are correctly installed, but the shelf is standing on an uneven floor or the feet do not distribute the weight evenly. The type of wall is also important – drywall requires special anchors that provide better support. During installation, it is essential to ensure that all screws, including those connecting the shelf parts, are tightened properly.

Another tip is to place rubber pads under the shelf if it is standing lightly on the floor – this can reduce vibrations. If you want the shelf to be particularly stable, you can also add an angle bracket reinforcement on the back, which is directly screwed into the wall.

How did you fasten it? And have you already checked whether all screws are properly seated deep enough in the correct anchors?

Correct. The stability largely depends on following the proper installation requirements. Generally, I recommend using metal toggle bolts or cavity anchors for drywall. For concrete or brick walls, universal anchors or nylon expansion anchors work best.

Additionally, all screws should be tightened to the torque specified for the anchors to prevent loosening from slight movements.

A wall mounting alone cannot ensure stability if the structure itself has play. Therefore, also check the connections between the individual KALLAX units and the floor levelness. It is also possible to secure the shelving further with angle brackets to reduce lateral wobbling.

Oh yes, I know that problem! 🙂 My KALLAX also wobbled slightly, even though it was fixed to the wall. What worked wonders for me was sticking small felt pads under the front edge. This makes the shelf much more stable and it no longer wobbles when I touch it lightly!

I also went over all the screws again and replaced the wall plugs with stronger ones. In the end, I had a really steady and secure piece of furniture. This will definitely work for you too! You can do it! :-)

That’s a good, simple trick.

Additionally, you should check whether the shelf is directly against the wall or if there are small gaps. Gaps can increase wobbling. Sometimes it’s enough to slightly adjust the position or use small spacers to ensure proper contact.
