Hello everyone,
I am currently looking into the Ikea PLATSA system because I want to find a child-friendly solution for our living room. My question to the community is: Are there any detailed guides or proven concepts for making Ikea PLATSA shelves and cabinets truly safe and suitable for children?
I am not only referring to preventing tipping and accident hazards but also to design tips that make it easier for children to access while maintaining stability and durability.
Does anyone know of secure installation methods, special accessories, or personal hacks that have proven effective in practice?
I look forward to your experiences and ideas!

A child-friendly design using Ikea PLATSA is definitely achievable, but it requires a few essential steps. First and foremost, secure anchoring to the wall is crucial to prevent tipping – I recommend using the original Ikea wall anchors, supplemented by additional heavy-duty brackets if the walls are suitable.
Regarding access: In lower areas, you can install child-safe handles or padded fronts to prevent injuries. Many have also had good experiences with installing soft-close hinges that help avoid finger pinches.
Assembly tips:
- All sharp edges should be covered with protective profiles made of plastic or rubber.
- Inside, I suggest flexible shelf dividers that can be adjusted for different toys or books.
It’s helpful to carefully consider in advance which items should be accessible and which should be stored out of reach. One more question for you: Do you use PLATSA more as a bookcase, sideboard, or wardrobe? Depending on the intended use, there are slightly different recommendations.

I am planning to use PLATSA mainly as a combination of a low sideboard and open shelving at the lower level, so it is accessible for children, with more closed storage space at the upper level that should be out of reach for kids.
My main focus is on secure, tilt-resistant mounting and making the lower compartments child-friendly – this is where toys and books that are frequently changed will be stored.
Your tips about soft-close hinges and edge protection sound very interesting. Are there any specific products you would recommend, or that work particularly well with PLATSA?
As a supplement:
I have thoroughly researched child-friendliness in furniture and consider the following key points for Ikea PLATSA:
- Wall mounting with multiple anchoring points (at least two levels)
- Use of rounded handles or handle strips without sharp edges
- Installation of child safety locks on doors if there are toddlers in the household
- Use of ABS edge protectors, which are common in the furniture industry
- Modularity for easy adjustment of storage space and access
Additionally, some fronts can be replaced with doors featuring mesh inserts or windows to improve visibility for children and thus enhance usability.
Soft-close hinges are not typical for PLATSA, but there are compatible retrofit options from third-party suppliers that can be installed relatively easily.

Another practical solution: colorful or fabric storage bins in the lower compartments – this keeps everything organized and allows children to easily access and put away toys.
Anchoring the unit to the wall is mandatory, and I recommend never leaving the system standing on its own feet. Especially when small children are playing with it, this provides the necessary stability to the furniture.
