Hello everyone,

I am currently working on lighting for my IKEA Platsa shelves and am looking for a clear guide or at least a proven plan on how to light these shelves optimally and safely.

I am particularly interested in which light sources are best suited (LED strips, recessed spotlights, etc.), how to manage the wiring within the system without limiting the flexibility of the modules, and, of course, the choice of an appropriate power supply. Are there any recommendations for suitable mounting methods to integrate the light sources as unobtrusively as possible?

If anyone has experience with PLATSA and lighting or even a detailed guide available, I would be very grateful!

I want to avoid the lighting looking messy or provisional afterwards, so I am asking for the most standardized approach possible.

Thanks in advance!

I want to ask a critical question right away: Is there really a standardized guide made specifically for the IKEA PLATSA system?

In my experience, PLATSA is so flexible in construction that a fixed, ready-made guide is hard to apply. Everyone has different room conditions, cable routing options, and even personal lighting preferences (color temperature, brightness, dimming...).

You should also keep in mind that many LED light strips, especially the cheaper ones, do not always meet safety standards or require proper heat dissipation. Without considering this, a guide will often remain incomplete.

My advice: Instead of hoping for a ready-made guide, focus on basic electrical installation principles, for example, strategically placing cable conduits and outlets, choosing a safe power supply, and using high-quality LED modules. This is the only way to ensure a reliable result.

The desire for a detailed, reliable guide is completely understandable! I would like to add that when lighting PLATSA shelves, there are some important technical aspects to consider in order to achieve a good and long-lasting result.

First, regarding the light source: LED strips are very popular due to their flexibility, but it is advisable to choose high-quality, dimmable versions with neutral white light (around 4000 K). These provide a balanced light color and do not generate unnecessary heat, which is an advantage in closed shelving systems.

Second, concerning the wiring: Since PLATSA allows for modular constructions, cable channels or self-adhesive clips should be used, which can be discreetly attached to the back panels or edges. This way, the cables can be hidden but still easily removed or repositioned if needed. It is especially important to ensure the cables are not bent sharply or installed stiffly to avoid breakage later.

Third, the power supply should come from a protected socket, ideally with a built-in transformer for 12V LED strips. I recommend integrating a switch or dimmer, which significantly increases convenience.

Fourth, mounting the light fixtures. With PLATSA, I have had good experience with aluminum profiles that also serve as heat sinks. These profiles can be mounted with clips or screws and allow very precise positioning.

I would ask you to share more about your specific setup: How many modules? What size? Is the lighting intended only as an accent, or are you aiming for full illumination? These details are important to tailor recommendations more accurately.

Wow, this is such a cool topic! I totally understand that you’re looking for detailed instructions because really good lighting makes a huge difference, especially with furniture like PLATSA!

I think that’s super important too! It would be great if you could say whether you want to create a cozy atmosphere or brighten everything up – because that has a big impact on your choice of lamps and controls.

Also, I can only encourage you not to hesitate to try LED strips! They’re incredibly flexible, can be dimmed, and even let you create amazing effects with colored LEDs.

If you need some guidance: many people start with a 12V LED strip connected to a small power adapter. Then add a small switch (for example, a simple rocker switch) in the cable, and everything works great.

Give it a try and feel free to share which modules you’re using exactly – I believe then we can offer even more tips!
