Hello everyone,

I am currently working on setting up a larger living room and have purchased several IKEA Besta units along with their doors. My problem is that after installation, the doors tend to warp slightly or do not sit perfectly flush. What is particularly frustrating is that the doors become misaligned over time, even after multiple adjustments to the hinges.

The question I would like to ask here is: Are there simple, practical methods to permanently align IKEA Besta doors so that they close flush and do not require frequent re-adjustment? I would appreciate any tips, tricks, or experiences that go beyond the usual hinge adjustments.

I am especially interested in advice on special tools, alignment techniques, or installation tips that improve stability and long-term alignment.

Thank you in advance!

Hello AIMOTE,

I can provide you with a detailed guide that has proven effective in practice for properly aligning BESTA doors long-term.

1. Preparation: First, check if the hinges are correctly installed. This means they should be secure, and the screws must not be overtightened.

2. Adjustment of the hinges: BESTA doors usually have three adjustment screws – horizontal, vertical, and depth adjustment. Use these systematically.

3. Check the walls or the cabinet carcass for dimensional accuracy and flatness. Slight irregularities here are often the cause of misaligned doors.

4. A tip for stabilization: After fixing the doors, you can apply small felt or plastic bumpers inside on the door edges to help maintain the door’s position.

5. For significant dimensional deviations: Use shims or thin plywood pieces in critical spots to distribute the clamping pressure more evenly.

I recommend aligning the doors step by step – first vertically, then horizontally, and finally the depth. Continuously check with a spirit level and door gaps. With patience, you can achieve good results that last as long as possible.

If you like, I can also share tips on the tools and sequences I use most effectively.

The most important thing is to tighten the hinges properly and use the correct screws for alignment. Often, a slight adjustment of the depth setting can already help.

To ensure the doors remain properly aligned over time, it is especially important to check the entire frame structure on which the doors are mounted. Even slight warping or uneven surfaces can cause the doors to require readjustment.

Here is my detailed approach:
- Align the cabinet evenly, checking with a spirit level
- Tighten the screws on the back; if needed, increase stability with longer screws
- Inspect the hinges for wear and order new ones if necessary
- Mount the doors loosely, fully align them, then tighten all screws

A useful method is to install the doors with slight tension, which is then pressed downward by their own weight, helping them stay in a stable position.

Have you checked whether the hinges from the initial delivery are actually compatible and original? Some reorder parts or replacements don’t fit perfectly and can cause problems.

Thanks for the quick tips so far.

@Filippo: All the carcasses are new, and I have checked them with a spirit level; everything looks fine. The hinges are genuine IKEA parts. The idea of slight tension sounds interesting—could you explain that in more detail?

@Jensson: Yes, I’d appreciate your advice on tools and the order of work; that sounds very helpful.

The doors tend to slightly tilt outward at the bottom edge after a few weeks of opening and closing, which makes the gap at the top appear larger. The depth adjustment doesn’t provide enough correction for me to compensate for this.

Exactly, this is a common and effective trick when doors tend to warp!

Regarding tools and procedure:
- Screwdriver with a good grip (a cordless drill can damage the screws)
- Spirit level / angle measurer
- Gap gauge or thin plastic shims to measure the door gaps
- Felt or rubber bumpers as adjustment aids

Recommendation:
1. Hang the doors loosely
2. Check and adjust the vertical alignment
3. Adjust the horizontal alignment, possibly with fine tuning of the hinges
4. Adjust the depth to achieve a flush fit
5. Conceal remaining gaps with small bumper solutions

It is important to make only small adjustments at a time and repeatedly check that the doors move freely in between.

With this method, my doors hold firmly over time and require hardly any readjustment.
