Hello everyone,

I have a common issue with my BILLY bookshelf from IKEA: the bottom shelf is located in our basement, where the humidity is often quite high. Unfortunately, I have already noticed slight signs of water stains and swollen wood. My specific question is: which methods or materials are best suited to effectively seal a BILLY bookshelf against moisture without significantly affecting its appearance? I am looking for a long-lasting solution for both the shelves and the sides of the bookshelf, possibly also in the area where it contacts the floor. Does anyone have practical experience or recommendations regarding impregnations, protective films, sealants, or structural measures? Thank you in advance for any help!

For surfaces, use a clear wood preservative coating that repels moisture. You can place a waterproof membrane underneath at the bottom. Important: Make sure that no moisture remains trapped for extended periods.

Oh, that sounds like a real challenge! But don’t worry, there are great solutions 😊

I sealed my BILLY completely at the bottom with a clear acrylic silicone. It held up really well and looks almost the same as before. I also placed small plastic feet under the shelf legs to prevent the floor from getting wet directly 👍

You should definitely try this combination; it really keeps moisture away! If you want, I can gladly provide exact product names. 🙂

For an objective addition:

1. Wood protection stains based on acrylic or polyurethane provide good breathable protection, reducing moisture without sealing the surface airtight.

2. Underlay: A PE (polyethylene) sheet as a barrier between the shelf and the floor helps prevent rising moisture. It is important that the sheet remains fully covered to prevent slipping.

3. Structural measures: Small spacers on the shelf feet to avoid direct contact with the floor.

4. Alternatively, water-repellent impregnations are available, but these are not necessarily suitable for particleboard (the material of the BILLY shelf) and may alter the appearance.

5. For wood that is already swollen, simple sealing is usually no longer sufficient; in such cases, the wood may need to be replaced or repaired.

Conclusion: A combination of wood protection stain and a proper physical barrier to the floor generally offers good protection in practice.

That sounds like a really practical idea, thanks for the tip!

I’m familiar with the problem of moisture affecting furniture – it can be really frustrating because you’re always worried something will get damaged. I also think it’s important to be patient and to address any issues early on.

A question for everyone: Has anyone had experience with nano-coatings or similar newer technologies that supposedly repel moisture very effectively? I’d like to know if these work on the edges and surfaces of the BILLY shelf without harming the finish or the wood underneath. Maybe someone can share their experience?

I also believe that simply replacing the affected boards often isn’t a long-term solution for rooms that remain damp, unless the root cause is addressed.
