Hello everyone, I am currently facing the challenge of installing my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinet doors so that they fit perfectly and without unnecessary gaps. I understand that the hinges are adjustable, but despite multiple adjustments, it’s not working properly: either the door doesn’t close flush or it rubs against the side.

I have already ensured that the cabinet carcass is mounted completely straight and I am using the original Ikea hinges. My question is: how do I install Ikea Metod doors for the best possible fit? Are there any special tips for mounting or adjusting that go beyond the usual hinge adjustment options? I would appreciate detailed advice, preferably including possible measurement points and adjustment steps. Thanks in advance!

Hello Sayan, I am familiar with this problem, so I will try to help you step by step. With Ikea Metod doors, the correct attachment of the hinges is key to achieving a good fit.

First, it is important that the cabinet carcass is perfectly square. You have already taken care of this, which is good. Next, check that all hinges are properly seated on the cabinet panels and that the metal plates on the door are securely screwed in. Poor or loose fittings can quickly lead to misalignment.

Regarding the adjustment options: Ikea Metod hinges usually have three screws:
- one for depth (how close the door sits to the cabinet),
- one for height,
- and one for lateral position.

My advice: first adjust the height so that the gaps at the top and bottom are even. Then use the side screw to regulate the left-right spacing. Finally, adjust the depth screw to align the door flush with the cabinet.

If you repeat this process several times, you can significantly improve the fit accuracy. It is important to make only small adjustments at a time and to gently close the door occasionally to check the gaps.

Let me know if you need more detailed help with any of these steps!

This is a crucial point, and I suspect that this is often where the problem lies when the doors do not fit properly. I would even go so far as to say that the carcasses should definitely be adjusted with a spirit level and a mallet before the doors are installed.

Furthermore, which hinges exactly are being used? Metod offers different types, some with soft-closing mechanisms and others without. The soft-closing hinges can be somewhat tricky to adjust, especially because the damping mechanism makes the screws more sensitive.

It is also worth checking whether the screws might be too tight or too loose. Screws tightened too much can block adjustments, while screws that are too loose may not hold the setting. Balanced tightening is essential here.

I also wonder if workshop experience plays a role during assembly. The door pre-tension is one of those small but important details that can make a big difference to the appearance. So, my recommendation is to carefully follow the manufacturer’s instructions, thoroughly check the carcass, and then work on the adjustments.

I can clearly understand how frustrating it can be when doors just won’t fit properly. I have been in the same situation myself, spending hours adjusting them only to still notice small gaps in the end.

What helped me was to be very patient and systematic, without getting discouraged. Often, the issue is due to slight unevenness in the frame or the back panel that might be overlooked at first.

It’s also important to keep in mind that wood-based materials, like those used in Ikea Metod, can warp slightly due to moisture or temperature fluctuations. Therefore, repeated checks and adjustments may be necessary.

I would also recommend testing the doors for a few days after the initial rough adjustment so the hinges can “settle in.” After that, fine-tune the fit again — this increases the chances of a long-lasting, precise alignment.

Make sure to follow these points carefully:
- Fully screw in the hinges, no partially inserted screws
- Adjust the set screws only minimally and make changes step by step
- The cabinet hinges should sit completely flush
- Always check with a square to ensure the doors are parallel

If all of this is correct, you will quickly find the optimal position.

I completely agree! Sometimes you think you can just adjust it quickly and strongly, and then it ends up even worse. I always call that "door chaos" 😄

Another tip from me: Take a calm half hour, preferably with some relaxing music or a coffee at hand – that helps improve precision and patience.

Also, it’s helpful to keep the doors open for a longer time after adjusting the hinges, so the materials and hinges can settle a bit. Patience is definitely an important factor with Metod!
