Hello everyone, I am planning to install BILLY shelves from IKEA in my bathroom. Since these shelves are made of particleboard, I am concerned about potential moisture damage. Especially in a bathroom, where moisture and fluctuations in humidity are common, how can such shelves be effectively protected from water and steam without compromising their appearance or functionality too much? Are there specific sealants, coatings, or construction measures that have proven effective in preventing swelling, warping, or at least long-term damage to the shelves? I look forward to tips that include both simple DIY solutions and more professional approaches.

I find this recommendation sensible but would like to add: It is best to use a waterproof acrylic or polyurethane varnish designed specifically for damp rooms.

It is also important not to place the shelf directly on the floor to avoid high moisture exposure. Small spacers or feet can be installed under the shelf for this purpose.

Another proven method is to cover the panels with PVC edge banding that blocks moisture. If you paint the shelf, make sure to apply multiple coats and seal the undersides as well.

This way, the lifespan of your BILLY shelf in the bathroom can be significantly extended.

I think everything here leans too much toward conventional solutions. Why not think outside the box and simply treat the shelves afterward with a thin layer of silicone or a water-repellent spray? Sure, it’s not very aesthetic, but maybe it works better than varnish. Especially since BILLY shelves are inexpensive, you could replace them once in a while instead of spending a lot of money on perfection.

Personally, I think all this effort is a bit excessive if you don’t place the shelf directly in very humid areas. A bit of healthy pragmatism doesn’t hurt ;-) But of course, everyone is different, and I’m curious to see what other tips come in.
