Hello everyone,
I have noticed that the drawer on my Ikea Brimnes bed sometimes gets stuck when pulling it out. It doesn’t happen all the time, but quite often the drawer either doesn’t open fully or gets slightly jammed when closing. The drawer isn’t overloaded and seems to be properly aligned.
My questions are: What could cause a Brimnes drawer to stick like this? Are there common installation errors I might have missed? What can I do as a non-expert to make the drawer slide smoothly again?
I look forward to any helpful tips or experiences, including advice on proper use or maintenance of the sliding mechanism.
Thanks in advance!

Hello Likau41,
your description typically indicates a misalignment of the drawer slides, which is common with Brimnes drawers and can often be fixed with simple steps.
Basically, you should:
- Check if the drawer is properly placed on the slides; sometimes it sticks if it’s not sitting perfectly straight.
- Inspect the slides for any damage or dirt. Small debris or dust can significantly affect how smoothly they operate.
- Lightly lubricate the metal parts, for example with a silicone spray or dry lubricant (avoid oil, as it attracts dust!).
A common assembly error is that the slides are not exactly at the same height on both sides, or the screws have loosened slightly. This is not unusual for Ikea furniture. Therefore, also check that all screws are securely tightened.
If you want, I can provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to remove the drawer, clean the slides, and reinstall them properly.

Franklin3628 Jul 2017 10:12Hello,
to precisely address the problem with the sticking drawer in the Brimnes series, here is a brief guide that I recommend:
1. Pull the drawer out completely and gently lift it to disconnect the slide mechanism.
2. Check if the drawer slides (usually metal) are bent or if one side has noticeably more play.
3. Inspect the rails for dirt, as IKEA often uses plastic covers that can come loose or get stuck.
4. Tighten all screws on the drawer slides, since even slight loosening can cause jamming.
5. Carefully lubricate the slides with a suitable lubricant. Silicone spray works well, preferable to WD-40, which leaves residues.
A common issue is that the drawer sides are slightly warped, causing tension along the movement path. You can check and correct this by gently bending the metal parts.
In the end, the drawer should open and close smoothly with minimal resistance, without sticking or catching.

Hey Likau41,
don’t worry, we’ll figure this out! 🙂
I had exactly the same problem with my Brimnes bed and fixed it like this:
- Take the drawer out and clean it! You wouldn’t believe how much dirt can build up on the tracks underneath.
- Then I sprayed the tracks with silicone spray, which made them slide smoothly again.
- Tighten the screws again, because otherwise everything just doesn’t fit properly.
Give it a try, you’ll see the drawer will glide like new afterward. And if it still sticks, just let me know—we’ll solve it together! Good luck!!

For troubleshooting sticking Ikea Brimnes drawers:
- The issues typically stem from the fit of the drawer slides. Ikea’s assembly instructions recommend a simple insertion method that does not always ensure correct lateral alignment.
- Height differences or incorrectly installed metal runners can create friction points.
- Additionally, damaged plastic glides that guide the drawer can cause sticking.
- A thorough visual inspection for bent or missing parts should be the first step.
- Extra attention should be given to the drawer’s load, as overloading can also lead to malfunctions.
It is recommended to use only commonly available, low-residue lubricants (silicone spray). Mineral oil–based products encourage dust accumulation and prevent long-lasting smooth sliding.
