Hello everyone, I recently bought an IKEA Pax wardrobe and now want to securely fix it to my tiled floor. Since the floor is very smooth and hard, I’m wondering which mounting techniques or special fasteners you would recommend to anchor the wardrobe firmly and prevent it from tipping over, without damaging the tiles or compromising stability later on. I would appreciate specific advice on suitable fasteners, such as types of anchors, screws, installation methods, or alternatives. Has anyone had experience with special floor anchor systems or adhesive solutions that work well? Thanks in advance!

It is best to use expansion anchors or chemical anchors if the substrate consists of solid ceramic. Simply screw the cabinet to the wall, drill through the tiles, and insert the anchors. This ensures a secure and stable hold without tipping.

In this context, it is important to assess the type of tiles. Are they truly full-ceramic tiles, or are they porcelain stoneware? The choice of drill bit should be matched to the substrate: for full-ceramic tiles, carbide-tipped drill bits are ideal, while special diamond drill bits are recommended for porcelain stoneware.

A secure anchoring of the IKEA Pax is typically done using the supplied wall fixings, which are often attached to drywall (plasterboard) or concrete. Since the load-bearing capacity is affected by the grout joints in tiled walls, the drilling point should ideally be on the tile itself, not in the grout line.

Additionally, I recommend using hammer anchors of suitable length, with a diameter of at least 6mm (1/4 inch), to ensure sufficient hold in the back wall. Alternatively, chemical anchors that use resin to fill the drilled holes can provide a more permanent and stronger bond.

Another important point is protecting the tiles—use a drill guide or drill protector to prevent the drill from slipping and to avoid cracks.

One more question: Have you already checked the width of the grout joints and whether the wall behind the tiles is solid? The choice of fixing method largely depends on this.

Thank you very much for the detailed answer! I took another close look this morning: the grout joints are about 5 mm (0.2 inches) wide and the tiles are made of porcelain stoneware, quite hard and glossy. The wall behind is concrete, so really solid. I think appropriate impact or chemical anchors should work.

However, I am somewhat concerned that drilling through the tiles with an impact anchor might cause damage. Are there gentler methods or special techniques to minimize the risk of cracks in the tiles?

Using tiles on a concrete floor provides a solid base, but drilling requires extra caution, especially with porcelain tiles. Here is a brief step-by-step guide for safely installing the Pax:

- Drill choice: As mentioned, always use a diamond or carbide-tipped core drill bit. Standard masonry bits wear out quickly on hard porcelain tiles.

- Drilling technique: Drill without hammer function, at low speed, applying steady pressure. Before drilling the actual hole, you can pre-drill with a small diameter bit (2-3 mm (0.08-0.12 inches)) to guide the main drill bit.

- Marking: Precisely mark the drilling spot with tape. This prevents the drill from slipping.

- Expansion anchors vs. chemical anchors: Chemical anchors (injection mortar) impose less mechanical stress on the tiles during curing because the resin hardens without impact, providing secure fixing while protecting the tiles.

- Fixing: It is best to attach the Pax directly to the wall, not the floor (tiles), since floor mounting is rarely intended and tiles especially do not handle lateral loads well.

- Anti-tip protection: Always use the wall anchors supplied by IKEA to secure the cabinet.

If you want, I can provide information on suitable drill bits or chemical anchor brands.

To add to that: Besides using tape on the drilling spot and a low drill speed, the following points are important:

- A drill stand can help guide the drill bit steadily and straight.

- Don’t set the drill bit too deep and check frequently if it has already gone through to avoid sudden breakthroughs.

- Use drilling fluid or water for cooling, which reduces heat and the risk of cracks.

I would always fix the cabinet to the wall for mounting. Floor fixings on tiles are uncommon and risky.
