Hello everyone,

I have an issue with my IKEA Malm drawer system where several drawers have completely stopped working. Specifically, they either hardly pull out or won’t latch properly anymore. Mechanically, something seems to be malfunctioning, possibly in the sliding tracks or the locking mechanism. My question is, what is the best approach for repairing this?

If multiple drawers are affected, what do you repair first? Is it better to check the slide rails first or the locking components? Are there common faults I should specifically look out for?

I want to proceed as systematically as possible and avoid taking everything apart blindly. Any advice on how to diagnose and fix the problem step by step would be really helpful. Thanks in advance!

Hello DEOJE,

If several Malm drawers are not working properly at the same time, I recommend the following order for repair:

First, check the runners or sliding mechanisms. A misaligned or bent track can cause drawers to stick or not close properly. Pay attention to damage on the plastic gliders and make sure the rails are fully installed.

Next, inspect the locking mechanisms, which often consist of small plastic parts and springs. These can break or come loose, leading to malfunctions.

This sequence is efficient because damaged runners cause fundamental problems, while locking systems mainly ensure proper closing.

If available, the IKEA assembly instructions for Malm drawers can be helpful as a reference during reassembly.

do you check the running rails

That's correct. Check the rails first, as they are the main cause. Then inspect the mechanism and replace parts if necessary.

Hello DEOJE,

I’m happy to add some input from my experience: Malm drawers usually have a two-track slide system with small plastic rollers or gliders. When multiple drawers are affected, the cause is often misalignment or dirt in the slides.

It’s worth cleaning the slides thoroughly, applying some silicone spray, and visually inspecting them for cracks or breaks. If parts are missing or damaged, they can often be ordered as affordable replacements from IKEA.

Regarding the locking mechanism: there’s often a small lever or spring that can get damaged from frequent use. You should check this only after the slides are running smoothly; otherwise, you might spend time on the wrong issue.

In short: clean and check the slides, measure the panel, remove the drawer, and then inspect the mechanisms. Patience pays off, as IKEA builds these pieces simply but often with delicate components.

defective rails can lead to fundamental problems
I completely agree with vinli, but I wonder if the issue might also be with the mounting? If the dresser is no longer level, the rails can easily become misaligned.

How are your placement and the underlying surface? If the floor is uneven, that can significantly affect the mechanism.

Also: Have you measured the drawers precisely? The Malm series comes in different sizes, and an incorrectly installed drawer can appear to be off track. Such measurement errors are easy to overlook.

Hello,

I would like to add a point that is often overlooked: The drawer runners in Malm units are not uniformly fully enclosed but consist of several modules. If multiple drawers in your unit are not sliding smoothly at the same time, the issue could be related to how the runner rails snap into the cabinet.

It is worth checking this connection, especially the small locking tabs. Damaged or broken tabs can cause the drawer to not properly engage with the runner.

Even if the slides appear to be intact, I recommend verifying this first because otherwise the drawer might be misaligned and get stuck.

In conclusion: A systematic inspection starting from the base (mounting and attachment to the cabinet) through the runner rails to the locking mechanism offers the best chance to identify the cause and get your Malm drawers working again.
