ᐅ My pet constantly drools on the Kallax – do you recommend sealing it specially?

AbbaelHello everyone,
my pet constantly drools on my Ikea Kallax shelving unit, and I’m wondering if any of you have sealed this piece of furniture specifically to reduce the issue. The surface already shows some small discolorations and slight watermarks, which, to be honest, is a bit frustrating.
I am considering treating the Kallax with a varnish or sealant, but I’m not sure which product is suitable or how to proceed without changing the appearance too much. Has anyone had experience with this?
I’m especially interested in which sealants are recommended for furniture with a smooth, rather matte surface and if there are any special care instructions to follow when a pet regularly drools on it.
Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hello Abbael,
First of all, it’s good that you are taking the issue with moisture and the residue caused by your pet’s drooling seriously. Kallax furniture is indeed coated with a film, but it is not completely waterproof and can be damaged over time.
A well-established method for sealing is to use clear, waterproof acrylic varnish or a special water-based furniture or parquet lacquer. These finishes create a protective layer that repels moisture and significantly reduces discoloration.
Important when applying:
1. Clean the surface thoroughly and let it dry.
2. If present, lightly sand any matte areas (fine sandpaper, e.g., 320 grit) to improve adhesion.
3. Then apply the varnish in several thin layers, allowing each layer to dry well in between.
Avoid solvent-based varnishes, as they can damage the coating film.
Additionally, you can place a thin protective fleece or an acrylic glass sheet on the shelf if you expect frequent drooling – this will mechanically protect the surface.
I hope this helps you!

The surface is already showing slight discoloration and minor water stainsThis clearly indicates that the standard film on the Kallax is not designed for long-term moisture protection.
For sealing, I recommend a high-quality, water-based polyurethane varnish. This provides a durable and clear protective layer. Important points:
- Apply several thin coats.
- Allow each coat to fully dry (at least 4–6 hours).
- Lightly sand between coats to ensure good adhesion.
Avoid oil-based finishes or solvent-containing varnishes, as they can cause the furniture surface to swell.
Care instructions: After sealing, the furniture should only be cleaned with a slightly damp cloth; avoid aggressive cleaners.

A very reliable method... clear, waterproof acrylic varnish or a special furniture or parquet lacquerThat sounds reasonable, but I wonder if such a varnish layer might eventually chip or crack over time, especially if the pet scratches at it with its claws or drools on it.
Does anyone have experience with the durability of these types of sealants, particularly when used in situations with pets? I think it’s important to consider this realistically. Another thought: Would a protective cover, like a glass panel or something similar, as PAR63 mentioned, be a more sustainable solution?
I don’t want the furniture to look worn or damaged again after a short time, despite the sealing.
