Hello everyone,

I recently modified the doors on my Ikea Kallax shelving unit with a DIY project, where I removed them, repainted them, and then reinstalled them. However, since reinstalling, the door no longer closes properly – it seems to hang unevenly, often stays open, or doesn’t sit flush with the frame. The hinges are original, and I haven’t changed the mounting aside from slightly tightening the screws.

My question is: what could specifically cause the Kallax door not to close properly after such a DIY modification? Is it usually due to bent hinges, incorrect adjustment, or could it also be related to the fitting accuracy of the frame or the door itself?

Maybe some of you have had similar experiences or know common pitfalls to watch out for with this kind of modification. I’d appreciate any concrete tips on how to readjust or repair the door so it closes smoothly again. Thanks in advance!

Good morning!

I can understand how frustrating it is when something doesn’t work after a lot of effort. In my experience, it was often due to the hinges being slightly bent or positioned incorrectly when reattaching them.

Sometimes it’s simply the order in which the screws are tightened that causes the door to be misaligned. Try fully loosening the hinges, holding the door straight, and then carefully realigning it before tightening again.

If you feel unsure, it might help to experiment with thin plastic shims behind the hinges to adjust the alignment. It requires some patience, but most of the time it’s just a matter of mechanical fine-tuning.

Check the original hinge.

Hang the door, then press gently and readjust the hinge screws.

The hinges are adjustable, so also check the screws on the back panel.

To solve the problem with the Kallax door not closing properly, it is best to proceed systematically:

1. Hinge condition: Carefully check whether the hinges were bent, twisted, or damaged during the modification. Sometimes even a slight misalignment can affect the fit.

2. Loosen screws and readjust: Hinges on Ikea furniture are often insert-on hinges with adjustable positions. Loosen the screws, position the door correctly, and then tighten the screws gradually. It may be helpful to have an assistant for this.

3. Frame and door: The door may have slightly changed shape or developed tension due to painting (wood can move, thin MDF panels can warp). Also, the frame might be slightly crooked, especially if the unit has been moved before.

4. Gap measurement: Measure the opening where the door is supposed to close. Even the smallest differences can cause unclear closing issues.

5. Use of shims: If the door does not sit flush, plastic or cardboard shims placed between the hinge and the cabinet can help improve the fit.

6. Closing mechanism: If applicable, check whether the door magnets or clips are still functioning properly and have not shifted out of place.

Also important: Is the door itself straight? Be sure to check this with a spirit level or by leaning it against a wall.

Hello Kanebu,

From your description, it sounds very much like the hinges were not reinstalled in the exact original positions when reattaching the doors—even if you used the original screws. My advice is to completely loosen both screws of the hinges and try rehanging the door step by step.

It often helps to position the door slightly higher or lower and then make small screw adjustments until the door sits flush.

Sometimes it is also useful to slightly shift the hinges themselves using a small screwdriver without fully loosening the screws.

Take your time with the adjustment, especially if the door might have warped slightly during the painting process, which can happen with thin materials.

I hope this helps you a bit!

That may be true, but I also want to raise the general question of how often one can actually expect these IKEA components to remain perfectly dimensionally accurate after painting.

Also, the frame might be slightly out of square, especially if the shelf has been moved before.

Are frame distortions common with Kallax, or shall we say: negligible? The stability of the doors strongly depends on the frame geometry.

Does anyone have reliable experience on whether the Kallax material changes during painting to the extent that the hinge tolerances are no longer sufficient?

It might be useful to take all measurements again before readjusting, rather than relying on visual estimation alone.
