naimjanHello everyone,
I am currently redesigning the children's room and considering using an IKEA Kallax shelf unit for storage. However, I have some concerns about its durability: How well does a Kallax shelf actually hold up to typical rough play by children?
In everyday use, kids might pull on it, jump near it, or lean against it. I am especially interested in whether the shelf is stable enough to withstand such stresses over time, or if it would be better to choose another option.
Does anyone have experience with Kallax shelves in a children's room, particularly regarding stability and safety? I would appreciate any feedback!

Hello naimjan,
your question is very valid because children’s rooms often experience heavy use, especially when children play actively or use the furniture for playing.
The Kallax shelf is made of particleboard with a melamine-coated surface, which generally makes it resistant to minor impacts and everyday pulling. However, it is not designed for children to climb or jump on.
If you want to use the Kallax, I strongly recommend securing it to the wall with the included wall-fixings. This greatly reduces the risk of tipping, which is especially important with children.
Additionally, you can improve stability by placing heavy items in the lower compartments and lighter ones on top.
If the children are very active or the shelf is used as climbing support, you should consider alternatives specifically designed for such use.

Hey naimjan, I think the Kallax is really practical for the kids’ room 😎. Of course, it’s not a climbing frame, but it’s great for storage, books, and toys.
I have this shelf in my kids’ rooms too – they can be quite wild sometimes, but so far no damage. Important: secure it well to the wall, otherwise it can quickly become unstable. And if the kids really want to climb, it’s better to get a separate climbing shelf or climbing wall 😉.

Regarding the question "Can Kallax withstand rough play in a child's room?" here is a brief assessment with some tips:
1. Material & Load Capacity: Kallax is made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) coated with melamine. This provides stability and scratch resistance.
2. Wall Fixing: Absolutely necessary! Most accidents happen when children tip over furniture. Be sure to secure the Kallax to the wall.
3. Load Distribution: Place heavy items in the lower compartments to lower the center of gravity.
4. Rough Play & Climbing: Kallax is not intended for climbing or jumping. Such stress can quickly cause damage or more serious accidents.
Conclusion: Kallax is great for organizing toys and books. For rough play and climbing, other solutions are needed.
