Hello everyone,
I am currently looking into the Ikea Platsa system and have a specific question that’s been on my mind: Are there versions of Ikea Platsa that are deliberately designed to include open shelving? Not just closed cabinet units with doors or drawers, but modules that remain open and feel less like traditional cabinets, more like shelves where you can display books or decorative items?
My reasoning is that I’m looking for a flexible system for my living room that offers both storage and some open elements. Some manufacturers offer modular furniture that can be customized very individually, but with Platsa I mostly find closed options.
Maybe someone here has experience with the system or actually knows of specific open shelves that are either officially available or possible as combinations? Are there accessories to modify or make Platsa units more open?
I would appreciate any concrete information!

Hi,
yes, Platsa does not actually offer fully open shelves in the traditional sense. The modules mostly come with doors or drawers, but you can use the internal compartments without doors, so you effectively have open shelving.
You can simply leave out the doors and use it as open shelving. In my experience, there are no accessories specifically for open shelves.

Hello NILSTE,
to answer your question in detail: The Ikea Platsa system is basically designed to be modular, versatile, and, above all, functional. Most of the prefabricated modules feature closed fronts, such as doors or drawers, that conceal the storage space. This is intended both for protection and for visual order.
However, there are no official Platsa modules sold as open shelves without fronts. Still, the system is flexible enough to create custom solutions:
- You can buy modules without doors or simply remove the doors, creating an open shelf space. However, these are not listed as such in the catalog.
- Sometimes sellers or second-hand platforms offer individual parts without doors, which can be specifically used as open compartments.
- Another option is DIY modifications or additions: you can install extra shelves or back panels to create open areas.
- Many users combine Platsa with other Ikea systems, such as Kallax units, which are open.
Please keep in mind that removing doors can reduce stability somewhat, and consider whether dust or noise is a concern for you.
I would be interested to know more about your room and your storage needs. Perhaps a combination of Platsa and other open shelving solutions would be useful.

Additionally, I would like to point out that Ikea does not offer a separate kit for open shelves within the Platsa range. If you want open shelves, you can simply omit the doors. However, keep in mind that attaching the doors is part of the system to ensure stability.
So, if you plan to leave the doors out entirely, you should take this into account during assembly to maintain the furniture’s stability. Sometimes this increases the assembly effort slightly and may require additional brackets or back panels.
In conclusion: Open shelves in the traditional sense are more of a custom solution with Platsa, not a standard product.
If you like, I can share some tips on how to best implement this or what to watch out for.
