Hello everyone,

I recently upgraded my IKEA KALLAX shelves with new doors and, at the same time, replaced the baseboards in the room to create a consistent look. After changing the baseboards, however, the KALLAX doors no longer fit properly within the frames—they start rubbing against the edges and some are difficult to close. I made sure not to adjust the hinges, and the shelf frames themselves appear unchanged.

Does anyone have an idea what might be causing this issue with the doors, considering that only the baseboards were replaced? Is there any connection between the baseboards and the door installation on KALLAX units that I might be missing? Or what else could explain why the doors suddenly don’t close correctly?

I would appreciate any tips, advice, or pointers to common causes!

Baseboards should not actually affect the doors. Check if the shelf is still perfectly vertical. Doors often get stuck when frames are out of square.

If the doors no longer close properly after replacing the baseboards, it could be because the entire shelf position has shifted slightly due to the new floor or the baseboards. Even minimal height differences in the floor can cause shifts that affect the door mechanism. Make sure to check with a spirit level whether the shelf is still level.

Hello rupuken,

I understand how frustrating it is when doors suddenly no longer fit. For KALLAX shelving units, the doors are precisely sized to fit. Since you mentioned that the baseboards were replaced, the following could have happened:

1. The new flooring or baseboards might have slightly raised or tilted the position of the unit, causing the frame to shift at an angle.
2. The door hinges are usually adjustable – it’s worth checking them carefully and readjusting if needed.
3. Also check if small uneven spots caused by the new flooring might be causing the unit to tilt.

It often helps to pull the unit away from the wall, realign it, and use a spirit level to check it at several points. Then adjust the doors accordingly. Sometimes it really only takes a few millimeters.

Could the installation of the new floor have slightly changed the position of the KALLAX?

I thought the same and was therefore puzzled. I didn’t change anything on the shelf before, all measurements are correct according to my checks.

That sounds plausible. However, the floor and the baseboards are exactly at the same level as before, verified with a very precise spirit level. The shelf is in the same place as before I started working.

I have tried that several times already, but the doors are sticking at the top and bottom edges, not just on one side.

I suspect that by installing the new baseboards, something in the room area was altered that I hadn’t considered directly.

Do you have any tips on how to check the door edges precisely for rubbing and at the same time narrow down the cause? Are there any special techniques or tools for this?

Door doesn’t fit? Try using masking tape or a matchstick to mark the edges where the rubbing occurs. This way, you can precisely identify the problem.
