Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to expand my kitchen with an IKEA Metod kitchen island and am especially interested in solutions that offer a lot of storage space without sacrificing a modern, attractive appearance. My kitchen is not very large, but the island should centrally serve both as a workspace and a storage powerhouse. I am considering how to make the best use of the Metod cabinets, perhaps with various drawers, pull-outs, or special internal organizers to accommodate everything efficiently.

I am particularly interested in:
- Which combinations of the Metod units work best for maximizing storage space?
- How can modern fronts and countertops be integrated to maintain a clean look even with a larger island?
- Are there any special considerations for assembly or installation, especially when combining multiple cabinet modules into one island?

I look forward to your experiences, concrete suggestions, and any advice on what to definitely avoid in a project like this. Thanks in advance!

For ample storage space, I would recommend pull-out cabinets, as they provide better access compared to regular cabinets. For the appearance, white high-gloss fronts work well; they look modern and bright.

Installation: It is important to securely fasten the island to ensure nothing wobbles.

Your plan to design a Metod kitchen island with ample storage and a modern look requires a systematic approach. First, you should determine the exact size of the island to ensure there is enough space for cabinets, walkways, and seating areas.

For Metod, I mainly recommend wide pull-out cabinets (e.g., 80cm (31.5 inches)) with at least two to three drawers, ideally featuring full-extension and soft-close mechanisms. These offer significantly more usable space and better accessibility than shelves or hinged doors. Accessories such as internal dividers and VARIERA boxes help organize cutlery, pots, or pantry items neatly.

Regarding the appearance, framed fronts or smooth lacquered surfaces in neutral colors (white, gray) are a good foundation. Combined with a countertop made of quartz or laminate with concrete or wood appearance, you can create a modern look that is timeless. When assembling, pay special attention to securely connecting the modules, as islands often stand alone and require stability through closed plinths or anchoring.

What is the exact size of your space, and which work functions should the island fulfill? Is simple storage division sufficient, or should it also include seating and additional features like a sink or cooktop?

Thanks for the advice! The island will be about 240x90 cm (94x35 inches), without a sink or cooktop, mainly intended as workspace and storage with one or two seating spots. Stability is a bit of a concern because I want to maximize storage volume, but without unsightly brackets on the edges or similar.

Regarding storage: I’m leaning towards deep drawers, maybe with internal organizers to store spices and kitchen tools efficiently. Does Ikea offer specific components that are particularly suited for this purpose? The fronts should be matte, relatively understated, perhaps gray or anthracite. For the countertop, I want a modern look with a slim edge, maybe a natural stone or ceramic appearance.

What are your experiences with the load-bearing capacity of the Metod modules when used as an island? Any tips on how to improve their stability further?

The load-bearing capacity of the Metod modules is good when installed correctly; however, it is recommended to connect the individual cabinets with screws and connecting fittings to prevent movement. For kitchen islands, a continuous kickboard or an additional support panel beneath the countertop is also advisable to link all modules and distribute the weight evenly.

For internal organization, Ikea offers the Variera system, which includes cutlery trays and various modular boxes. Especially for spices, you can use modular organizers inside the drawers.

Regarding the fronts: matte gray or anthracite colors fit very well in modern kitchens. Just make sure to have good lighting with darker colors so that the island does not appear too heavy.

Yes, the Metod drawers with soft-close and internal drawers work really well. Variera or SKUBB boxes help with organizing. For stability, you can secure all modules tightly together using the connector set (panel connectors).
