Hello everyone, I am currently focusing on furniture modification, specifically with the IKEA Hemnes range. I am particularly interested in whether there are assembly instructions or at least proven methods for combining Hemnes furniture with other materials—such as metal, glass, or solid oak. I want to enhance or functionally extend my furniture pieces without completely altering the Hemnes style’s appearance. Are there any recommendations on which materials integrate well, if specific connection techniques should be considered, or how to practically carry out the assembly? If anyone has already completed projects in this area or can provide well-founded advice, I would greatly appreciate your experiences and tips!

Basically, there are no official IKEA assembly instructions that combine Hemnes components with other materials, as the product range is designed for wooden elements and the fit accuracy applies solely to the Hemnes line. However, I can confirm that in practice, adapter plates, custom-made brackets from metal angles, or connecting screws are often used to join metal frames with the wooden parts. It is important to pay attention to the material thickness and, if necessary, use specially longer or stronger screws. Glass is usually combined with Hemnes by adding surface-mounted shelves or inserts, ideally with rubber or plastic washers to protect the wood and ensure stability.

A small note on joint quality: The original joints in Hemnes are designed for wood connections and often rely on dowels and screws specifically sized for MDF or solid wood substructures. When using other materials such as metal or glass, it is recommended to use screws with metal threaded inserts or self-tapping screws to ensure stability. For metal connections, welding or bolt systems with washers are also suitable to avoid damaging the wood structure.

I would like to add that combining Hemnes furniture fronts with solid oak, for example by attaching oak strips or suitable solid wood appliqués, is possible. It is important to use a high-quality surface sealant to harmonize any color and texture differences. Regarding the joinery, it is advisable to use specially adapted wooden dowels or familiar inlay techniques to avoid stress in the materials. In general, with skilled craftsmanship, a combination of Hemnes with other high-quality materials can certainly be achieved – however, this usually requires precise planning and the appropriate tools.

Thank you for the information so far; it has already been helpful. From my own experience, when I first tried to combine Hemnes with a metal frame, the screws at the wood joints did not hold, and I ended up having to completely redesign the structure. I can personally recommend, especially if you have little experience with wood-metal combinations, using metal brackets mounted on the outside that support part of the weight. This reduces stress on the wood and increases stability. For me, it was almost a learning-by-doing process. It can certainly be frustrating, but with the right patience, it works out.

In addition to the previous suggestions, I would like to add: If someone is new to woodworking, it is advisable to create a sketch or a simple model before starting a renovation. When combining materials such as wood and metal or glass, marking the required drill holes and connection points is crucial to avoid mistakes. Additionally, installation aids like drill templates can help position screws precisely. Another tip is to consult a professional when working with materials like glass to prevent injuries and ensure stability.
