ᐅ Upgrading Ikea Metod Drawers: Tips and Tricks for Adding Soft-Close Functionality

KidabauHello everyone,
I have an Ikea Metod kitchen cabinet system with standard drawers that unfortunately do not yet have a soft-close function. I would like to retrofit this soft-close feature to enable quiet and smooth closing of the drawers.
My specific question is: Which mechanical soft-close dampers or systems are compatible with the existing Metod drawers? Are there any important installation tips or tricks I should keep in mind to ensure the damping works optimally while keeping the drawers easy to operate?
I have heard about various retrofit kits but am uncertain about load capacity, material quality, and installation effort. I am also interested in whether upgrading later on is worthwhile or if it is better to buy entirely new drawers with a built-in soft-close mechanism.
I look forward to your experiences and recommendations!

Soft-close retrofit kits for Metod drawers are available from Ikea as well as third-party suppliers. It is important to choose the correct length and to pay attention to the drilling measurements.
Always install the dampers on the outer sides, as this ensures the best performance. Make sure that no screws block the drawer slides.

Hello Kidabau,
I’m happy to provide you with a clear step-by-step guide for retrofitting the soft-close function on Ikea Metod drawers:
1. Material selection: It’s best to use Ikea’s own soft-close adapters; third-party options are often cheaper but make sure to check customer reviews.
2. Preparation: Fully extend the drawer and, if necessary, unload it to make installation easier.
3. Installation: The dampers are either attached to the side walls or directly to the runners. For Metod, side mounting is often the better option.
4. Adjustment: After installation, test the dampers under load and adjust if needed.
Common mistakes:
- Screwing in the wrong place, causing the drawer to jam
- Attaching the dampers either too loosely or too tightly
Summary: With some patience and the right components, retrofitting works well and greatly improves comfort.

BASTIANTI7 Feb 2017 10:29Great topic! I love upgrading my Ikea drawers to soft-close because the result is really impressive!
Tip: Take your time during installation and test the dampers before fully tightening everything. Often, the position isn’t perfect at first and you need to make adjustments.
Don’t be hesitant! It’s really enjoyable when you notice how the drawers now close smoothly and almost silently. A small upgrade with a big impact! 🙂

valerie-tr7 Feb 2017 11:16Hello, I would like to explain the technology behind retrofitting soft-close functionality in more detail:
Metod drawers systematically use metal or plastic runners, where the soft-close feature is implemented through hydraulic or pneumatic dampers that slow down the closing process.
There are generally two installation options for the retrofit kit:
- On the inside of the drawer side panel, directly in existing drill holes or with special brackets
- Or on the runner itself, if compatible screw points are available
It is important to align the dampers correctly during installation so they function properly. You should check the exact drilling measurements according to the instructions and pre-drill if necessary to avoid damaging the wood.
The material quality also plays a role: high-quality dampers made of metal with hydraulic mechanisms are more durable than purely plastic models.
If you expect a high load, for example, many heavy pots in the drawer, the damper strength should be selected accordingly; manufacturers often provide weight specifications.
What kind of load do you expect for your drawers? That might help with the selection.

What load capacity have you planned for your drawers? That might help with the selection.Good question! The drawers are usually filled with kitchen utensils, cutlery, and sometimes small pots. The weight is mostly between 5-10 kilograms (11-22 pounds), rarely higher.
I’m also concerned about solid workmanship since the drawers will be used frequently. Therefore, it’s important that the soft-close dampers are durable and don’t require retrofitting after just a few months.
