Hello everyone, I have owned the popular Malm dresser from IKEA for some time now and am generally satisfied with the quality and design. However, I am bothered by a persistent squeaking noise that occurs when closing the drawers. I have tried to understand why this happens, but I suspect it is due to the interaction between the metal slides and the rollers.

I am especially interested if anyone has had similar experiences and what solutions or maintenance tips can help to eliminate the squeaking permanently. I would also appreciate recommendations on how to keep the Malm dressers in good condition despite this noise – I love these pieces but want to maintain them well.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Also check if the drawers are properly installed and do not scrape at the bottom. Sometimes they squeak if they are slightly misaligned.

In short: Clean the guides, use silicone spray, ensure the rails are properly positioned, and check the rollers if necessary.

That sounds plausible, as I sometimes feel that the drawer doesn’t run perfectly straight.

Less is more. Too much lubricant leads to dirt buildup

I will keep that in mind. Regarding misalignment: Is there a simple way to adjust Malm dressers to improve this? Or do the drawer slides need to be replaced if it happens repeatedly?

If the drawer sticks or scrapes, check the drawer slides for dirt and adjust the alignment slightly. If the problem persists, the rollers should be replaced.

I can totally relate to this problem – even if you love a piece of furniture, an annoying squeak can be very frustrating. When I first got my Malm dresser, the noise bothered me as well. After thorough cleaning and replacing a single drawer roller, the noise stopped.

It’s worth putting in the effort because otherwise, the dresser quickly loses its charm. And a fully functional piece of furniture simply brings more joy 🙂

If the squeaking comes back, I always find it helpful to check all the screws again, as small tensions can develop through regular use.

a step-by-step guide would be great

Here is a brief guide:

1. Fully pull out the drawer.
2. Carefully check the drawer slides on the dresser to see if they are properly aligned. Tighten any loose screws with a screwdriver.
3. If the drawer slides can be removed (usually with a small metal tab or clip), take them out and clean them.
4. Thoroughly clean the slides and drawer rollers with a lint-free cloth.
5. Then apply silicone spray sparingly.
6. Reassemble everything and test the drawer.

Important: Do not forcefully pull or lever. The components can be fragile depending on their age.

If you can provide more details about the exact model (dresser height, number of drawers), I can give you more specific advice.
